Not having read any Regency fiction I found this quite delightful. It took me a while to get used to way of Regency life but it was light, witty, funny and, oh so romantic. Nice. ( )

Lady Wombat says:

I picked this up by mistake, thinking it was the first of the author's Bridgerton series. But I read it anyway, and was very glad I did. Quinn's series features a family of eight children, with each of her novels focusing on the romance of one of them. Most romance novels focus tightly on the hero and heroine, but Quinn adds the interplay of close siblings who tease, squabble, but most of all love one another, which simultaneously makes her novels far more funny than the typical romance book, and more realistic (at least if you don't mind 21st century concepts of the self and inner psychology in the midst of your Regency romance). And Quinn's writing itself is quite good (even if she is a Harvard grad ;-) ), particularly her penning of the columns of Lady Whistledown, a gossip columnnist, quotes from which open each chapter.

This book, focusing on the apparently hapless Penelope Featherington and her long-unrequited crush on the popular Colin Bridgerton, brought back a lot of memories of the days of longing for a boy who didn't seem to know you were alive... How Colin eventually begins to see more in Penelope, and how Penelope begins to discover more in herself, unfolds in a deftly plotted and emotionally compelling read.

Utterly, wholly, and completely delightful. This book really epitomises every lonely, outcast girl's dream -- the most handsome, charming man imaginable picks *her*. But the real wonder is in how it unfolds -- Penelope and Colin are both truly wonderful characters, and the depth that Penelope, in particular, reveals is marvelously rewarding. She is an entirely unassuming character, carrying a secret of incredible magnitude. Any woman who has ever harboured a tendre for a man who had no clue about her feelings for him will see a bit of herself in Penelope's plight, and be thoroughly charmed by the outcome. As for Colin... *sigh!* What is there to say? He's always been my favourite of the Bridgerton brothers, and getting to read his love story was just such a happy thing. This book is one of the jewels of the Bridgerton collection, and I highly recommend it.

I have to admit that Colin is my favorite Bridgerton and Penelope is the only likable Featherington. I liked them together. What I didn't like was the similarities to the previous book. There are quite a few between Penelope and Sophia. Usually Quinn makes each of her characters so very different from each other. And the idea that Colin needed to publish to feel different from his brothers is a little too similar to Benedict's painting.
I enjoyed the interactions between Colin and Penelope, I just hoped the story would have been a little different. ( )

Romancing Mister Bridgerton is the fourth book in the Bridgerton series, and centers around Colin Bridgerton and Penelope Featherington. Penelope has been in love with Colin for years, but doesn’t think he will ever notice her. But when he finally does, will her secret ruin everything?

This book is an amusing read, and has a very big surprise lurking in it’s pages. It starts out as a rather ordinary book, but the latter part of the book makes it a great read. Highly recommended, although reading the series in order is probably better for your enjoyment of this one. ( )

Setting: Regency England

Sensuality: 7

Penelope Featherington fell madly, hopelessly in love with Colin Bridgerton two days before her 16th birthday. Unfortunately, Colin has always seen Penelope as the plump, shy best friend of his younger sister. By the time Penelope is 28 and a seasoned member of the English ton, she's accepted that her love for Colin is destined to remain unrequited and she shall be a spinster forever. Fate, however, has other plans. When Lady Whistledown's Society Papers announce that Colin has returned from his nearly nonstop travels, Penelope is blissfully unaware that her life is about to change dramatically. Colin is equally unaware of the turn his life is about to take. He's not surprised that his beloved mother is determined to marry him off, but he's rather astonished to find himself inexplicably drawn to Penelope. Her dry wit and intelligent mind are delightful, and Colin soon finds himself joining forces with her to deflect his matchmaking mama's good intentions. Together, the two will thwart their mothers' iron wills, face the formidable Lady Danbury, confront the gossips of London society, and resolve the lovely dilemma of falling in love. And, oh yes, there is that matter of the true identity of Lady Whistledown. Will the twosome unmask the elusive journalist? Or will their efforts be doomed to failure like so many others' before?

Romancing Mr. Bridgerton continues author Julia Quinn's wildly popular series of Regency historicals featuring the Bridgerton family, The Duke and I, The Viscount Who Loved Me, and An Offer from a Gentleman. True, the novel possesses all that we've come to expect from Quinn, including deft plotting, witty repartee, a faultless Regency setting, and expert characterization. But perhaps the book's most pleasing facet is Quinn's quietly nuanced handling of the hero's and the heroine's internal growth, which is furthered by their blooming relationship. They're two strong individuals made stronger by their bond. Now that's love. --Lois Faye Dyer
