i just finished doomsday book by Connie Willis. the narrator, jenny sterlin, is so associated in my mind with Laurie King's Russell and Holmes series that it took me about 13 of the 26+ hours to get her associated with Willis' characters, but i ended up enthralled.

I just finished Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. It could have been really good but I had a lot of problems with it. Trying to write a full review now. (For someone who reads so much, I'm dreadful at articulating what I want to say.)

I completely loathed, despised, detested and abominated Doomsday Book by Connie Willis.
After reading this idiocy, I succumbed to the pleas of an LT friend and attempted To Say Nothing of the Dog, which I liked even less than the first one. I lasted 27pp and threw it away.
From, AnnieMod's library, I picked Doomsday Book .
Thanks to the people who mentioned Connie Willis here. I hadn't heard of her before but I've now read Doomsday Book , To Say Nothing of the Dog and Lincoln's Dreams and she just keeps getting better. I already put in an order for Blackout to be released in February.

I haven't been reading much new stuff this year. Doomsday Book by Connie Willis is probably the best one I've read this year, I think.
The Doomsday Book is quite brilliant. It's one of the rare books I make time for a re-read every now and then. I like a few of her other books as well, but nothing is as good as Doomsday .

Hi Nikki, while Doomsday Book is a good sci-fi involving time travel and I second whatever lunacat already mentioned, but it IS a book with PLAGUE as the central theme, still don't let that put you off from trying this book.

Book #8 The Doomsday Book
I come down on the side of those who loved this book. I know someone who did not like it because she felt that the history was not accurate, but I am blissfully ignorant, so was just able to enjoy the characters, the story and the suspense. A very satisfying read.

My jaw dropped when I saw your post. I'm so glad you enjoyed this book. It is one of my favorite books ever. I re-read it periodically, probably every other year. I enjoy it more each time. After I read this book, I became a Connie Willis fan and she's never let ...
I just finished Doomsday Book and it's very absorbing, a great read. There's several threads in this group about it and no bad reviews, everyone loves it.
I've had The Doomsday Book on my TBR list forever - I'm determined to read it this year, it's a back up for my TBR Challenge. I think I'm going to have to move it up on the list. It's been sitting in my TBR stack in my bedroom for over a year now!
Doomsday Book and The Independence of Mary Bennet both sound very interesting; to the TBR list they go! I'm especially curious about The Independence of Mary Bennet; I really love P&P, but I'm curious to read the 'sacrilege' anyway. Thanks for the reviews!
Now I really want to reread The Doomsday Book . I read it when I was quite young and I liked it, but I think it was too much for my teenage self to handle. Crazy Horse sounds really good!
... She's also a good three years overdue on her next time-travel novel "All Clear". Grrr! Arrgh! Her best "somber" novel is The Doomsday Book and her best lighthearted novel is To Say Nothing of the Dog. Both take place in her time-travel universe. If you read anything else by her, I'd love ...
With all of the recommendations for The Doomsday Book I will have to move it to the top of the pile. And now I have to find a copy of The Incredible Voyage, although I think I will like more because of the sailing parts of the adventure.

And I too absolutely loved Doomsday Book and I'm glad you did as well.

#35 - A bunch of people in my book club have made a tradition of re-reading The Doomsday Book every December. We're big Connie Willis fans. I think some of the little details in the Middle Ages sections -- the general lack of hygeine, dirty fingernails, etc, add to the sense of realness.
