Somehow had never read the 1st book in the series. Great start ( )

This book is just a hot mess. I get it was the first book in the series, and it was written in 1989, but damn. You would think that Lucas Davenport hates women based on his actions in this book.

Let's get to the plot first.

A serial killer is raping and murdering women in Minnesota. We don't know who he is, but we know he calls himself and others call him the "Maddog Killer." We have an inkling based on some third person points of view that the Maddog is hell bent on killing and raping women with his rules left behind, daring the police to catch him. Heck, the only saving grace with the whole rules thing is even the serial killer knew this was a dumb thing to do.

Here enters Lucas Davenport.

Lucas is a man's man. He has millions of dollars because he develops games. There is no real explanation about that though, he just thinks up games with friends and sells them. He is into poetry, and books, guns, expensive cars, and knows everything there is to know about everything. He is a man's man. A guy you can drink with and who would sleep with your wife if she gave him a come hither look. It wouldn't be his fault though because men always just think with their penises. It's a rule.

I mean I seriously can't even get outraged by this. I laughed. Out loud. Several times while reading this.

Lucas who is a co-lead on this serial killer is still somehow able to sleep with one woman and then goes and gets involved with a witness.

I should say though that Lucas does have one friend that is a woman he has not had sex with, it is heavily implied though it's because this friend became unattractive though.

So in this book Lucas is involved with two women, thinking about banging a third, and still has women just ready to throw their panties at him like he's a rock star.

Lucas in turn demeans this women either verbally or mentally, treats everyone around him with contempt, and still people are looking to him to solve the serial killer murder.

The writing at times is a bit graphic, we have Sandford describing the killings and it's pretty important to note, that you are reading this through the serial killer's eyes. Heck even after with investigators standing over these poor women, we have a male gaze looking them over like pieces of meat.

The flow is not quite there though. I think it's because this is written in third person and we often jump from character to character in just a few sentences. It was confusing at times figuring out who was speaking.

The setting of Minnesota felt very real and cold. I liked how the city and other places in the story were incorporated. Also having this book start in the 1980s was fun to read since it was great to see people fishing for quarters to use payphones. I can't wait to see what happens when Sandford has Lucas dealing with the craziness of the 1990s. One reason why I love Sue Grafton's alphabet series so much is that we have Kinsey in the 1980s and we know she's going to stay there.

The ending was not shocking at all since heck if you've been paying attention, Lucas is a man's man and does what needs to be done even if it's wrong.

People aren't wrong that there are a lot of cliches (the sadistic serial killer toying with the cops, the handsome ladies' man investigator, overzealous reporters) but in fairness, this was written just long enough ago that they might not have been quite so cliche. There were definitely some eye-roll moments (especially dealing with Davenport's relationships with women) but it was good enough that I'll check out the next book in the series. ( )

I had high hopes for this one. But the pacing was excruciatingly slow and the dialogue juvenile. There was no thrill or mystery and I found myself skipping huge chunks of the book, just to find something good.

Too much focus on female sexuality for me but plot, pacing, dialogue were better than anticipated. Lucas Davenport is very likeable and while no saint, is intelligent, has a good, generous heart, cares about people, physically strong, doesn't accept crap from most people, and driven to fully stop bad guys.

Could have developed more of a profile on 'killer,' i.e. what in his background had caused him to do the unthinkable again and again.

Will try next book in series.
