I think I'll switch to The Monsters of Templeton for my last OJ; it sounds much more fun than The Gathering.

I've got The Gathering and someday am going to read it, but have heard more "mehs" than excitement from other LTers.

... I read years ago with an Irish woman, who was able to shed quite a bit of light on the dynamics of the Irish family. I have The Gathering on my TBR pile, and am hoping it's equally good. Book #47 The Gathering by Anne Enright * This book came across flat to me, and the author uses WAY too many words to get her point/idea across. Just too verbose; I finished the book, only barely. There were moments of inspiration and words finely put together, but overall I was disappointed.

... of the Year award last month and was shortlisted for last year's Booker Prize, is very good. And Anne Enright's novel The Gathering won the Booker Prize in 2007 and is set in contemporary Ireland.

The Gathering - Anne Enright. Why: I recently discovered the Booker Prize. This was 2007's winner. An odd book that deserves a nice review, which I will spin out later and leave on my reviews page. But for now: brilliantly written rumination of a 39 yo Dublin woman, Veronica, the eighth of ...

The Gathering by Anne Enright. The prose is stunning. One member of an Irish family muses on her family history when one of her numerous siblings dies. I'm one of those who thought The Gathering was just OK, probably because it was overhyped and I was expecting more. It was finely written but just didn't engage me.

I am adding The Gathering to the Continent, too. I have heard mixed reviews of the book, so I will give it a try and decide for myself :)

Link to previous 999-2009 thread here Well, when it came to sticking with my original 999 categories on my first thread, I was definitely a "Cheater, Cheater, Pumpkin-Eater!" I would like to say that I'm 'turning over a new leaf' ...

I've got The Gathering on my tbr pile and hope to get to it at some point this year

Hi Linda I remember that some people on LT last year didn't like The Gathering- maybe because of some of the subject matter- sexual abuse- but I think that it is handled well.

Cyrel I've had the Gathering on my tbr pile for a year. I must get to it, especially after reading your wonderful description. I'm currently reading The Reader.

48. The Gathering by Anne Enright. This book about a woman and her narration about her family history as she buries her brother ( who has committed suicide) is excellent. Enright's use of language is well chosen although she is writing about child abuse and maybe lost memories. The Irish ...

16. The Gathering by Anne Enright. I appreciated this book much more after I was about half-way through. A very bleak look at a large Irish family after the death of one of the siblings, with the sinister shadow of abuse creeping like bindweed through the generations and the memories.

I am about 1/3 of the way through The Gathering by Anne Enright. It's going pretty quickly, which is good, because I'm reading it for book club later this week. I'm not wild about it, though. Another member of my book club warned me that she (the author and/or the main character) seems to be ...

Nice review of The Gathering! Those were pretty much my thoughts about it, also. The strange thing about this book, though, is that I read it more than a year ago, and it keeps coming back to me, and I seem to remember it more clearly than other books I read then (and liked better).

Finished Twilight last night. Next up is The Gathering by Anne Enright for book club on March 27. Also, The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery is waiting for me at the library.

Hi anisoara. I have The Gathering gathering dust in my TBR pile. Did you enjoy it?

#31 LouisBranning, thank you for your endorsement of The Gathering. You're right, of course -- I should actually read it before I make up my mind not to like it. I am encouraged!

snash, just finished Wild Swans only a month or so ago, and couldn't agree more. AMQS, the tepid reviews of The Gathering shouldn't put you off it at all, it's strictly an LT thing, but the book drew raves both here and in the UK, and for all the grim circumstances of its heroine, has an ...

... savor. After that I think I'll read Angle of Repose by Wallace Stegner before I need to tackle my next book club read, The Gathering. After tepid (at best) reviews of The Gathering here on LT I'm not particularly looking forward to it.

Trish - completely agree about The Gathering - the best thing I can find to say about is at least it wasn't very long, so it was over fairly quickly. Another pair of books read. I was going to describe this pair as from the sublime to the ridiculous, but actually I think they were probably ...

>23: she does teach creative writing herself so this does smack of being a little ungrateful... I still haven't read The Gathering, but I thought What Are You Like? was breathtakingly good. One of those books with staggering coincidences that somehow contrive to make you believe in them.

... It's in the title: The MAN Booker Prize. OK, checked it out, turns out they get funding from the "Man Foundation." And Anne Enright won last year. She's as much a woman as George Eliot ;) I was mistaken. Sorry.

I will look for The Gathering at the library, I saw they have the translation :-)

Fantastic review of The Gathering- thanks! I will need to be in the right mood to read it though... it's been staring at me from the shelf for months. She sounds ghastly.

You've convinced me that I must read The Gathering. Thank you for the insight (and to her personality too)

71 - That's maths I can't do. I settled on reading The Gathering before starting on World without End. Sort of regretting it at the moment, but I'm sure I'll get something out of it, and then I'll be really pleased and ready to tuck in to the Follett. Right. Bed time.

The Gathering, most definitely. I kept waiting for something to happen, for it all to be worth it. But alas. I found Lolita to be a bit mixed - loved the outset, thought the end was a bit strange and tacked on, but the road trip in the middle? Incredibly boring. The only thing that got me ...

I have to agree on The Gathering (read this year) and The Thirteenth Tale (read last year). But the worst one for me was Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks. I wouldn't have finished it, except that a good friend asked me to read it and The Player of Games (which was a little better), ...
