The title paraphrases John's vision in Revelation, "the street of the city was of pure gold, like transparent glass," and his promise that the faithful will walk there at the end of their time here on Earth. It is an arduous journey that begins in post-World War II England and encompasses the tragedy, joy, temptation and redemption of a man finding his way in his new country of Canada, and also finding his way to "that land where there are no more heartaches and nothing destroys or separates."
