I happened to read this right after Babylon's Ashes from The Expanse series. The overlap in ideas and themes is extraordinary. Belters have colonized a star system with a few presumed uninhabitable planets, a huge asteroid belt, and a gas giant, mined for its hydrogen. As in Babylon's Ashes, a civil war has destroyed the original infrastructure. Life goes on, but the more foresighted can tell that the economic trends are all downhill, and only decades of diminishing resources remain. As in The Expanse, characters from different cultural backgrounds -- those who live mostly gravity free, those who live in a gravity well, those who live on the radiation-poisoned old capital of the system -- struggle and frequently fail to understand each other. Two of the main characters are members of a multi-husband-wife family, as in Holden's parents from the Expanse. The chapters of the second story (Outcasts of Heaven Belt) switch between representatives of the major groups. Everyone is portrayed sympathetically, even if at odds with our heroes. This is the stronger story of the two, nicely building towards a layered cultural crisis. The first story, Legacy, has its moments, but is saddled with an old-fashioned romance, even for the 1970s, when it first appeared. ( ) Two novelletes - Legacy and The Outcasts of Heaven Belt. The Heaven system had no habitable planets, but does have colonies and astroids. Civil war leaves resources and technology for scavengers. Legacy: A freelance reporter finds a prospector with something the major corporations want badly. Outcasts of Heaven Belt: An outworld ship comes to establish trade, but the remaining colonies form two groups to try and steal the ship and its technology. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
