A powerful chronicle of a wounded woman's exploration of nature and self After nature writer Gretel Ehrlich was struck by lightning near her Wyoming ranch and almost died, she embarked on a painstaking and visionary journey back to the land of the living. With the help of an extraordinary cardiologist and the companionship of her beloved dog Sam, she avidly explores the natural and spiritual world to make sense of what happened to her. We follow as she combs every inch of her new home on the California coast, attends a convention of lightning-strike victims, and goes on a seal watch in Alaska. Ehrlich then turns her focus inward, exploring the tiny but equally fascinating ecosystem of the human heart, and culminated in a stunningly beautiful description of open-heart surgery.… (mer)

Jeeez, this has been hard going for such a tiny book. It sounded so fascinating, but sadly what I EXPECTED from it turned out to only be a small part of the book as a whole. When Ehrlich is talking about the science of lightning, about the mechanics of a lightning strike, about its effects on the human body, about the medicine behind recovery from such a devastating electrical surge - all this is SO interesting. Unfortunately a large proportion of the book is instead devoted to restless, self-indulgent, self-absorbed, faux-spiritual wallowing, and in these moments the author often plunges into prose so purple it actually made me laugh a few times. It was like reading bad teenage poetry. Suffice it to say, I wouldn't recommend this one. 2.5 stars, purely for the on-topic interesting bits. ( )

Haven't read it yet, but have read an excerpt somewhere. She describes, from first-hand experience, what it's like to be hit by lightning, then the necessity of having to, essentially, "go it alone" because it's a very rare doctor who knows anything at all about electrocution injuries.
Looked fascinating.

Again, highly recommended. You will learn much about lightning and what it does to a human body. LOVED this book. ( )

And you think you've had a bad day? A startling medical adventure. Lightning strike survivors have conventions!
