Herbert George Wells was perhaps best known as the author of such classic works of science fiction as The Time Machine and War of the Worlds. But it was in his short stories, written when he was a young man embarking on a literary career, that he first explored the enormous potential of the scientific discoveries of the day. He described his stories as "a miscellany of inventions," yet his enthusiasm for science was tempered by an awareness of its horrifying destructive powers and the threat it could pose to the human race. A consummate storyteller, he made fantastic creatures and machines entirely believable, and by placing ordinary men and women in extraordinary situations, he explored, with humor, what it means to be alive in a century of rapid scientific progress. At the dawn of a new millennium, Wells' singular vision is more compelling than ever.… (mer)

Wells's fascinating short stories are seldom anything like 'science fiction' as currently defined. Wells wrote compellingly about speculative natural history, careful scientific observation and unexplainable outcomes that are evocative of his times. The stories are full of bizarre events or creatures experienced by everyday intelligent people, detailed description and (more often than not) inconclusive endings. But all are embedded in an Imperial Britain at the turn of the 20th Century, with all the cultural assumptions that that entails. ( )

DNF. Some of the stories were quite good but a few were horrifically racist. Could not continue

I read about 25 of the 63 short stories here, which was my intent; I pretty much knew which ones I wanted to check out. Country of the Blind is the best story here; it was Nabokov's favorite. Overall, although another dozen or so are of merit, Wells isn't as good in this format. His novels are much better. ( )

Being a favorite of mine, Wells can hardly go wrong. ( )

Wow! This collection of short stories is the largest number of short stories I've seen bound in one cover. Noticeably, if you find this book, the chances are it's price will be a bargain. There are several gems inside and those that don't quite hit the mark appear to be the seed for other later authors to develop. ( )
