In Laura Ingalls Wilder: A Writer's Life, Pamela Smith Hill delves into the complex and often fascinating relationships Wilder formed throughout her life that led to the writing of her classic Little House series. Using Wilder's stories, personal correspondence, an unpublished autobiography, and experiences in South Dakota, Hill has produced a historical-literary biography of the famous and much-loved author. Following the course of Wilder's life, and her real family's journey west, Hill provides a context, both familial and literary, for Wilder's writing career. Not a huge amount of new info here, but I very much liked the focus of the biography on her as a writer. BUT...I am left to wonder a bit when the author writes of LIW's trip to San Francisco in 1915, saying she"...cruised at sunset beneath the Golden Gate Bridge..." when the bridge wasn't built until 1937. I imagine she'd read somewhere about her cruising through the Golden Gate and didn't realize it was called that before the bridge. ( )

Examines the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder and the relationship with her daughter and editor Rose Wilder Lane.

I bought this during my visit to Laura Ingalls Wilder's Rocky Ridge home in Mansfield, Missouri, last summer, though I have had it on my wish list to acquire for some years.

I have already read Hills' fabulously edited, annotated book of Wilder's Pioneer Girl manuscript. A Writer's Life covers much of the same material, of course, but is a quick and fascinating read as it specifically focuses on Laura Ingalls Wilder's development as a writer. This begins with her childhood writings through her daughter Rose's rising career, to the Pioneer Girl manuscript and the subsequent Little House books. The publication story behind the books truly intrigues me. As an author myself, I have some insight into the baffling world of New York City publishing, and it amazes me how little some things have changed in eighty years!

I really like how Hill handles the controversy of the authorship of the books. The book abounds in citations--this is a scholarly work--and her research is meticulous as she demonstrates through existing letters the role that Rose played in the development of the series.

In all, a great read for anyone with an interest in the real stories behind the Little House books, and definitely a faster, cheaper, and more accessible read than the full tome of Pioneer Girl (though I highly recommend that, too). ( )

This was a very good book. It was straightforward about Wilder's writing career and the influence and collaboration her daughter Rose Wilder Lane shared in the creation of the Little House books. Much of what Hill wrote in A Writer's Life is a part of the new Pioneer Girl that came out this year; However, Pioneer Girl has Wilder's original autobiographical manuscript along with Hill's annotations and wonderful photos. Another great book about Laura Ingalls Wilder and the creation of the world of the Little Houses. ( )

I am very interested in Laura and her life, at least in part because we are distantly related to her. I had read a little but about her daughter Rose previously. This treatise solidified my beliefs about Rose who was a good editor but not half the writer her mother was, in my opinion.

For a while Rose even moved to the Wilder"s property in Missouri even though she hated living in the state. She exerted control over them by building a house on the property and moving them into it even though it was designed to her tastes and the home they had previously built suited them well. Rose moved into their home. Eventually, Rose moved away. After this her relationship with her parents eased, especially her working relationship with her mother.

This book is a scholarly treatise and not a flowing lyrical look at the lives of the Wilders. ( )
