A Caress of Twilight begins a few months after the events in A Kiss of Shadows. It is December, and Merry and the Sidhe warriors she has chosen as her lovers have returned to Los Angeles, California. Merry is approached by Maeve Reed, previously known as the Goddess Conchenn before her exile from the Seelie Court and now a famous Hollywood actress. Maeve asks Merry to perform a fertility rite that will permit her to have a child by her dying human husband. In return, she will tell the princess that the reason for her exile.
Merry's uncle, Taranis, King of Light and Illusion shows new and disturbing interest in Merry and invites her to the Seelie Court. Meanwhile, the Nameless, a spell formed to hold all the wild magics of the faerie, attacks Maeve Reed's home. It is finally defeated by Merry and her companions, Merry herself showing for the first time her second Hand of Power--the Hand of Blood. The result of the destruction of the Nameless is the release of the magic which formed it. This magic transfers itself to the victors, who begin to exhibit unforeseen side effects.

princess Meredith Gentry is constantly on guard for her life w/help from royal guard & some interesting friends. The sex scenes are imaginative & so hot! An awesome read. Gotta read the whole series! ( )

This was a compelling enough read, but as it was coming to a close I felt as if there were very important plot points that Hamilton sort of just skimmed over instead of truly telling her reader about. Such as there being more mass murders. I understand that Doyle and the others wouldn't know about the first one in the civilian home, but they did know about the second because it had been on the news, but the reader wasn't told. Secondly, I felt that Maeve Reed's whole situation was sort of skimmed over. We meet her, she tells Merry her problem, then nothing till they are suddenly performing a fertility right. There was no explanation of how they got to that point. There are many other cases like this throughout the book. It is almost as if Hamilton invests so much energy talking about sex and going into minute detail about clothing and hair that her plot suffers. I guess some readers aren't reading these books for plot, but an attempt would be nice for the rest of us. ( )

Just cleaning the rest of the Laurell K. Hamilton books out of my to-read list. This series is alright ... I don't like it as much as the Anita Blake series. This storyline in this book wrapped up a little too quickly for my tastes. ( )

I think it is getting better and better. I like this book and I will buy the rest just to see what happens next.

Bokbeskrivning

Amazon.com (ISBN 0345478169, Paperback)

Faerie princess and private detective Meredith Gentry juggles love, sex, intrigue, magic, and more in this witty and sensual novel from Laurell K. Hamilton. Merry has her hands full: she's desperate to conceive a child and thereby claim the Unseelie throne; she's the target of intrigue from both the Seelie and Unseelie Courts; her newest client is an exiled goddess with a secret that could get them all killed; and a hideous fey force that alarms even her formidable lover-warriors is loose in Los Angeles.

A Caress of Twilight is infused with Hamilton's characteristic appealing blend of sex, magic, wit, and romantic dilemma. The mystery takes a back seat to the concerns of Faerie power and politics, making the book less balanced, but Merry's growth in leadership and power, along with a bang-up ending, won't leave fans disappointed. Readers new to Hamilton might be advised to start with A Kiss of Shadows or the extremely popular Anita Blake series. --Roz Genessee
