As the nuns of St. Frideswide's priory prepare for the welcome end of Lent, their peaceful expectations are overset by the sudden return of long-vanished Sister Cecely. Nine years ago she fled from the nunnery with a man. Now her lover is dead and she has come back, bringing her illegitimate son with her. She claims she is penitent, that she wants only to redeem her sin and find safe haven for the child. Neither she nor her son can be turned away, but their presence begins to stir doubts and questions in the hearts of some of the nuns about their own faithfulness to this enclosed life they've chosen to live. Sister Cecely may be penitent--however much Sister Frevisse may doubt it--but fully truthful she is not, and as the apostate nun's lies begin to overtake her, dangers of more than one kind--and maybe murder--become an unwanted part of life in the priory.… (mer)

The priory is thrown into upheaval by the return of the apostate nun who ran away nine years ago. I always enjoy reading the Dame Frevisse novels, and this was no exception. Seeing the inside workings of the priory from two opposing viewpoints was interesting and refreshing. ( )

Firstly, this reader could not tell when this book took place. There was nothing said, no descriptions, no words that would give one a clue of when this story took place. I gathered medieval from the jacket blurb. Secondly, the ending was so convoluted that I'm not sure what the resolution really was! I won't be continuing with this series. 320 pages ( )

The Apostate’s Tale
An interesting perspective of a “well-known” era. I enjoyed learning about a different aspect of the Medieval time. Frazer’s assortment of characters and motives made the suspense thick, although sometimes repetitive. ( )

Perhaps not one of the best in this series, but still a convincing foray into the world of a medieval nunnery. Even more important, Ms. Frazier presents a convincing picture of the medieval mind -- too many heroines in other medieval mystery series are simply modern women in long skirts, with attitudes that would have been incomprehensible in their fictional context. Why is this "perhaps not one of the best"? The villain of the piece is worse than necessary (not even one virtue?) which makes her dull, and the subsidiary characters, except for the nuns, are not that clearly differentiated. Still, I'll keep it, and look forward to the next. ( )

The Apostate’s Tale by Margaret Frazer. We live in a world filled with violent conflicts in Iraq, Afghanistan, Zimbabwe (the list could go on and on), political battles nearer to hand, and twenty-four hour media coverage ratcheting up the noise in our heads. So we can be forgiven if we just need a break from it all. Frazer’s latest entry in the Dame Frevisse series set in 15th century England presents such a break. As the author herself notes, there is a total lack of politics with no mention of the ongoing dispute between the Duke of York and King Henry VI. The entire book takes place inside the confines of St. Frideswide’s priory. And not one single person dies. But that is not to say that evil does not make its presence known. The arrival of Sister Cecely, who disappeared nine years previously with her lover, disrupts the nunnery’s preparations for the end of Lent and the celebration of Easter Week. Her return also causes many of the nuns to question their own faith and her lies bring trouble from the outside world to St. Frideswide’s, requiring Frevisse to take on more responsibility as a mentor to her fellow sisters and to use her detection skills to find a resolution to the situation. In the end, Cecely acts as a catalyst for events that will significantly change the priory’s future.
As Alan Gordon, another historical mystery author, says, “This [story] is all character driven, and [Frazer] really puts you inside their heads. Frevisse’s own growth as a character is quite wonderful.” There have been times when reading Frazer’s Joliffe series that I have tired of her detailed descriptions of the internal thoughts of her characters, but for the most part this story moves along at a reasonable pace, even though Frevisse’s most strenuous activity is walking from the cloister to the guesthall or the church. Fans of Frazer’s previous books will not be disappointed.
