I'm not so fond of this Duggan because I'm just not that much a fan of Edward the Confessor. He was rather dull, and there's no real way around that. But the rest of the book, the assemblage and arrangement of the incidents, and the depth of the research, is Duggan working well at the stuff he does better than anyone. So, for the good Catholics in the crowd, "this one's for you." ( ) I stopped reading Alfred Duggan's The Cunning of the Dove about 100 pages in. It's another one of these historical books where the main character is the least interesting of all the historical personages bouncing around. It's all about the grand sweep of events, seen through the eyes of the passive and uninvolved king's chamberlain. Even the saintly King doesn't seem like much of a hoot. Ah, well. 1265. The Cunning of the Dove, by Alfred Duggan (17 Mar 1974) This is a fictional biography of St. Edward the Confessor, king of England, who died in 1066--leading to the battle of Hastings and the Norman Conquest. I found it rather interesting though since I knew so little of the history of England before 1066 it all seemed strange to me. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

St Edward the Confessor, King of the English, is commonly despised by historians; he was the last of his dynasty, and after his death his country was conquered by the foreigner. But that foreign conquest was exactly what St Edward had wished for. In this novel Alfred Duggan brings to life different customs, races and languages, as well as the violence and struggle for power between the Godwinssons and other great Earls - a Saxon England which seemed too large a country to unite except in dread of the Vikings.
