This book has always been a favorite of mine and I love it every time I read it! I love reading it to my nieces and nephews and can't wait to spread it to my classroom. A classic children's story. Where the Wild Things are follows a misbehaving boy as he travels across the sea to a jungle where wild things live. He is their king, but eventually misses home. He travels home and finds hardly any time has passed while he was off on his adventure. Sendak writes a story that in the end has children thinking...Was the story real? Was he dreaming? Did Max visit the Wild Things? The use of words or lack there of on some pages attribute to the students engagement of the story. The pictures also enhance the story with their size and gradual appearance of what is happening. Read the 25th Anniversary edition. The book I borrowed from the library had a sticky note in the back pages with some questions, reproduced below: > "What kinds of mischief does Max get into?" > "Does the gender of Max's parent (and the fact that only one parent is mentioned) make a difference?" (Never noticed this before: there's only a mother figure) > "Why does Max's picture resemble Sendak's artwork?" (Not sure what this refers to.) Somehow, the overall vibe of this book is similar to Alice in Wonderland or Spirited Away.
I love the cute ending here. (
