Conceptual Physics, Tenth Edition helps readers connect physics to their everyday experiences and the world around them with additional help on solving more mathematical problems. Hewitt's text is famous for engaging readers with analogies and imagery from real-world situations that build a strong conceptual understanding of physical principles ranging from classical mechanics to modern physics. With this strong foundation, readers are better equipped to understand the equations and formulas of physics, and motivated to explore the thought-provoking exercises and fun projects in each chapter. Included in the package is the workbook. Mechanics, Properties of Matter, Heat, Sound, Electricity and Magnetism, Light, Atomic and Nuclear Physics, Relativity. For all readers interested in conceptual physics.… (mer)

If you're preparing to study physics than is this book the one you have to read before starting. It's giving you insight in what's physics is about from mechanics (and Newton's Laws) to the relativity of Einstein. Probably you don't understand everything but that's not the goal of the book, it's to give you a glimp of what you can expect from physics. And this without all the mathematics. The mathematical part is for further study. You need to take the time to read the book. I read it in a period from two month's every evening after work a little bit but enjoyed it at the same time. I taught a conceptual physics class using this textbook for a few years. It's not the best, but I really like it. ( )

An excellent text for the teaching of physics from a very conceptual (not so overly mathematical) standpoint. I have used it with great success for the last three years. ( )

I think we must retain the belief that scientific knowledge is one of the glories of man. I will not maintain that knowledge can never do harm. I think such general propositions can almost always be refuted by well-chosen examples. What I will maintain -- and maintain vigorously -- is that knowledge is very much more often useful than harmful and that fear of knowledge is very much more often harmful than useful. -- Bertrand Russell, 1872 - 1970

To the Student:
Perhaps the most exciting discovery that you can make about the physical world is that all the diverse phenomena of nature are tied together by surprisingly few relationships.
Prologue:
Modern civilization is built on science.
Some two thousand years ago, Greek scientists understood some of the physics we understand today.
