Other great story for grades 5-8. Lots of fun saving the wild panthers of Florida and solving a mystery ( )

Another book by Carl Hiaasen for middle schoolers. Great characters that students can so relate to. Who wasn't had a teacher they didn't like completely, or known the bully, misunderstood kid, and what an adventure they all go on. there are so many good elements for this age group in Scat. the relationship of the 2 main characters, is it like or like like, the CSI elements of discovery in the story, the environmental foes make for good 'bad' guys. this is a fun read for this age group but they may learn a few things along the way.

Once again Carl Hiaasen has given us an environmental story that keeps us on the edge of our seat. There are several mysteries to be solved in this book. Hiaasen does an excellent job of tying everything together. This story takes place in Naples, Florida. I live only an hour from there. Mrs. Starch the Biology teacher has taken her class on a field trip into the Everglades. When a fire breaks out, the trip is cut short. When everyone their teacher is missing. Hiaasen throws in a weirdo substitute teacher named Wendell Waxmo, a suspect named Duane who has a history of setting fire, an oil company trying to find a way to drill in the Everglades and a couple of kids who try to solve it all. My students who have read and loved Hoot and Flush will enjoy this one just as much. I enjoyed it because the Everglades is a place my husband and I try to go to every year. It is worth saving. ( )

Really good plot! Never read this author before and the storyline definitely kept me on edge. I was slightly disappointed that there were quite a few curse words in a child's book! Other than that, it was a great story. ( )

This is cute. Te story documents the far-fetched attempt to save one of a set of twin cougr cubs in Florida's swamps.I think the climax is pretty unbelievable, but it is cute. A good young-adult read. ( )

Bokbeskrivning

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 0375834869, Hardcover)

Mrs. Bunny Starch, the most feared biology teacher ever, was last seen during a field trip to Black Vine Swamp. The school’s headmaster and the police seem to have accepted the sketchy, unsigned note explaining that her absence is due to a “family emergency.” There’s no real evidence of foul play. But still, Nick and Marta don’t buy it. Something weird is definitely going on.

Carl Hiaasen is a columnist for the Miami Herald and is the author of many bestselling books, including Sick Puppy, Nature Girl, and The Downhill Lie. He lives in Florida.
