This photographic essay is a gut punch from the start. The cover, showing a little boy with an over sized hat standing on the warp threads to get at a bobbin at the top of a loom is heartbreaking. But when you open up the first page, there, staring back at you is a little five year old boy who the narrative informs you, gets up at 3:30 a.m. to a bell, then he goes and shells shrimp all day long. He's been doing this since he was FOUR!
This is the story of Lewis Hine and his work to end unfair child labor in America. The book scores a 3/4 on items I wanted to look up for the index and the bibliography is well written, easy to use and thorough.
This is a photgraphic essay that focuses on the exploits of Hine and the crusade to end child labor through the use of his thought provoking photos. This book brings to life the horrors of child labor in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I would use this to illustrate the COST that industrialization exacts on the people who benefit from it.
Russell Freedman, who sadly died last month, was the author of over 50 books for young people. I have little doubt as to his methods or credibility as a source for these wonderful and award winning books.
The photographs and well written narrative document the story of child labor and the champion of its abolishment, Lewis Hine.

Teachers: I would use this book to illustrate the Child Labor Reform movement. It would also be a good companion for any study of Mother Jones as though it does not deal with her specifically, the photos illustrate the type of thing she was against.
Students: This is a great source for information on any research paper about child labor or labor reform in general or the history of photography. ( )

Kids at Work, being filled with images of children working hard for next to nothing pay, is a rather sad book. This is a great historical picture book for an American History or Civics class. The book tells the story of an investigative photographer named Lewis Hine and his documentation of child labor in the early part of the 20th century. This was instrumental in the introduction of anti-child labor laws during the early to mid 1900s. I would recommend this book for older teens. ( )
