I had the same reaction to Alexander McCall Smith. I remember taking The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency on a vacation with high hopes, and although I finished it, I couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about. Glad it's not just me.
I have The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency on Mount TBR. I hope I enjoy it, but if I don't, oh well. There are plenty of other series to read!
I actually enjoyed the first few books of The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series, but the last few have fallen flat for me. If you haven't like them yet, it doesn't get better. I will not read another one.

My suggestions I'm trying to get us to read are The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency , I Don't Have to Make Everything All Better, and The Color Code. But so far, none of my books have made it onto the reading list.

No. 1 Ladies detective agency is a wonderful portrayal of life in Botswana. How accurate it is I have no idea, but it's a cheerfull read!
Hmm, Alexander McCall Smith's Ladies No 1 Detective Agency series would seem to fit the bill here, too, although Precious Ramotswe is not strictly speaking an 'amateur'.
They're very gentle; indeed, I'm not sure that they really deserve to be classified as mysteries.

I couldn't really get into the #1 Ladies' Detective Agency either, although I may just not have been in the right mood; I did really love his Portuguese Irregular Verbs trilogy.

Another series I can't seem to get into is Alexander Mccall Smith's #1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, although I like his Isabel Dalhousie series just enough to read the third one.
