I had the same reaction to Alexander McCall Smith. I remember taking The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency on a vacation with high hopes, and although I finished it, I couldn't figure out what all the fuss was about. Glad it's not just me.

I have The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency on Mount TBR. I hope I enjoy it, but if I don't, oh well. There are plenty of other series to read!

    I've settled on the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency to start with. I figured it will make good summer reading and (on a more fickle note) the part of the AMS's website devoted to that series happens to feature some cute meerkats :)

    Just to check I'm doing this properly.. I would list No.1 Ladies Detective Agency by Alexander McCall-Smith under Botswana because that's where the books are set. ??

    I agree with #2:thorold it's a matter of opinion. I loved the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, but hated the Sunday Philosophy Club.

    I have been thinking about starting the The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency series, as well, and I assume that is the first book in the series.     Hmm, Alexander McCall Smith's Ladies No 1 Detective Agency series would seem to fit the bill here, too, although Precious Ramotswe is not strictly speaking an 'amateur'. They're very gentle; indeed, I'm not sure that they really deserve to be classified as mysteries.
