For a romantic, it's life's ultimate question: What is This Thing Called Love? Actor and novelist Gene Wilder explores twelve possible answers in this emotionally involving book about different kinds of love: star-crossed, intense, needy, eternal, unrequited and even comical. With delicacy of feeling and a simple style that adds to the power of his fiction, Wilder creates memorable lovers and silly suitors, unexpected attraction and careful courting. What is This Thing Called Love? is foranyone who has ever yearned for a deep connection, made a study of love, and spent their life trying to find the real thing. "A lighthearted reminder of love's potential (requited, even unrequited) to make a life worthwhile."--Los Angeles Times… (mer)

What a fresh look at the spectrum we call love, very enjoyable. ( )

A fun collection of short stories with a romantic theme. Not as awesome as Wilder's more famous work, 'My French Whore,' but enjoyable nonetheless. ( )

I don't feel like hearing his answer. ( )

If I were to read Wilder's books for their pure literary prowess, I would have been disappointed by this collection. I read Wilder's works, however, to get up to date on an artist for whom I have great respect. The stories in this collection offer a raw look into Wilder's approach to writing, including his flaws and short comings. I see his personality and personal experiences showing through the minute details of the stories. Writing clichés are found abound; in normal situations I'd scoff at the writer's poor choices. With Wilder, I appreciate the inside view to his thoughts and planning.

Although the writing may leave something to be desired, which comes as a surprise compared to Wilder's other works, the content is a page turner. I'm am not a hopeless romantic even in the least sense of the words. But the quirky interpersonal relations and Wilder's educated perspective offer a page turner.

If you're a Wilder fan, I definitely recommend the collection. If you're not yet a Wilder fan, start with his "Kiss Me Like a Stranger". ( )
