The first volume of the Blacksad series introduces John Blacksad and invites us to follow the investigation into the murder of the famous actress Natalia Wilford, with whom Blacksad became involved while working as her bodyguard. The narrative is set in 1950s America, in a noir environment, with a very dark cinematic style, due to its realistic lines. The most original feature lies in the fact that all characters are anthropomorphic animals, whose species reflect their character. John Blacksad is a black cat, although it has some white fur.

There are some stereotypes, as almost all law enforcement officers are canids or foxes, while underworld characters, the outcasts, are reptiles or amphibians. Besides John Blacksad, there are two other characters with some prominence: Smirnov, a police inspector who helps John with his investigations, and Weekly, a dwarf weasel, who works as a sensationalist journalist and who occasionally acts as the protagonist's sidekick, though we only meet him in volume 2.

This is definitely a series not to be missed. The illustration is exceptional, with the use of dramatic shadows, night scenes and gloomy interiors. ( )

Blacksad est un chat noir au museau blanc qui exerce la fonction de détective privé dans le New York anthropomorphisme des années 1950. Cet ancien vadrouilleur est souvent d’humeur sombre et a perdu toutes ses illusions sur le monde qui l’entoure. Mais cela ne l’empêche pas de se battre pour un peu de justice.
L’actrice Natalia Wilford est retrouvée morte. John Blacksad décide de prendre l’affaire en main pour retrouver coûte que coûte l’assassin de son ex-fiancée.
J’ai été subjuguée par cette bande dessinée digne d’un scénario de polar grandement mené. Le graphisme est somptueux, les détails sont d’une précision étonnante ainsi que les expressions humaines qui transparaissent sur ces visages qui nous font presque oublier le faciès animal. Pour résumer, Blacksad, qui a remporté de nombreux prix comme vous pouvez le constater, est une création artistique et scénaristique de talent qu'il faut à tout prix découvrir !

My first books of the year! I'm flying through these and loving every moment of them. They are a detective series where the main character is a black cat name Blacksad. These stories have social, racial and economic influences. I highly recommend them! ( )
