I have always understood Mimesis to be legendary, because in its sweep it focuses on not only literature and literary history, but related fields like culture and philology, for example; and also because of its multiple values, e.g. instructive (in a tutorial sense) as well as entertaining and ... I've just started reading Mimesis in Norwegian. I assume that it's a (very) famous book about literature, and I wonder if other members have read/are reading this book, and would like to discuss/comment on it here.
By the way: I'm also reading a collection of essays (in Norwagion) by Auerbach: ... Hmmm... coming from Comparative Literature, it's a tie between Erich Auerbach's Mimesis and a pile of Foucault. ... situated his paintings in flemish towns.
If you want to see how this works in literature, I suggest Eric Auerbach's Mimesis or Hans Frei's Eclipse of Biblical Narrative. (Clearly Frei is dealing with one text. Auerbach deals with many.
