All the Lovers in the Night av Mieko Kawakami
A nuanced novel exploring a woman's attempt to choose. Fukuyo's life is empty, save for what others have put in to it or asked of her. She is a manuscript proofreader - noble, but by definition she is reading other people's stories while having none of her own. Her peers - the same age, the same birthplace - are the only people she has to try and model herself on (though for me, they also struggle with the void but find other ways to mask it). The first half was slow, but the second half is full of beautiful insights in to our tiny moments in life and attempts to build an identity.… (mer)
½I really enjoyed reading this book. The investigation of Fuyuko’s inner and outer life really resonated with me. I thought the structure of the book was very well done, with the flashback in the middle to her teenage years, which shed some light on her behaviors and how we get to her quiet, lonely life. I look forward to reading more by Kawakami!
This just did not work for me. Could care less about the characters so why am I investing time in them?
A very interesting and somewhat philosophical look at bullying and it’s effects. I really enjoyed reading this book, it flowed really well and I couldn’t put it down until I had finished it.
