Kort biografi
Diana Athill was born in London and was raised at Ditchingham Hall in Norfolk. She read English at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford, graduating in 1939. As World War II began she was hired as a researcher for the BBC, where she stayed through the end of the war.
After the war, Athill joined her friend André Deutsch in establishing his first publishing firm Allan Wingate, where she served as an editor. Five years later, in 1952, she was a founding director of Deutsch’s next publishing company, which bore his name. At André Deutsch, Athill worked closely with many authors, including Jean Rhys, John Updike, Mordecai Richler, Brian Moore, V.S. Naipaul, and Molly Keane.
After a 50-year career in publishing, Athill retired from André Deutsch in 1993 at the age of 75. She wrote two volumes of short stories as well as a novel. However, she was best known for her autobiographical works and memoirs.

Pleasant enough but unessential.

I have enjoyed all of Diana Athill's books and hope she will publish her correspondence with Jean Rhys. This book is more of a hodge-podge than the others, but if you're still writing lively, honest prose at age 100, who cares?

Great read and insight into the mind and life of a honest London publisher/editor

Not a favorite. Good storyteller, well drawn characters, but a bit dark for my taste. I was quite startled at the ending. I was cruising right along seeing a possibility for light at the end of the tunnel, and snap it was over. I guess this is where I let my imagination decide how things work out. I received an advance readers copy of this from the publisher and EdelweissPlus. I ordered a copy from the library thinking something was missing in my edition, but no that's that!
