Om författaren

W. H. Auden, who was born in York, England, on February 21, 1907, is one of the most successful and well-known poets of the 20th century. Educated at Oxford, Auden served in the Spanish Civil War, which greatly influenced his work. He also taught in public schools in Scotland and England during the visa mer 1930s. It was during this time that he rose to public fame with such works as "Paid on Both Sides" and "The Orators." Auden eventually immigrated to the United States, becoming a citizen in 1946. It was in the U.S. that he met his longtime partner Chester Kallman. Stylistically, Auden was known for his incomparable technique and his linguistic innovations. The term Audenesque became an adjective to describe the contemporary sounding speech reflected in his poems. Auden's numerous awards included a Bollingen Prize in Poetry, A National Book Award for "The Shield of Achilles," a National Medal for Literature from the National Book Committee, and a Gold Medal from the National Institute of Arts and Letters. Numerous volumes of his poetry remain available today, including "About the House" and "City Without Walls." W.H. Auden died on September 28, 1973 in Vienna. (Bowker Author Biography) visa färre

Selected poems av W. H. Auden

Vers är bland det svåraste jag försöker skriva om, speciellt samlingar: hur sammanfattar man hundratals korta verk, som kan sammanfatta ett helt skrivande liv? Är samlingen på annat språk är det än svårare: det får en verkligen att känna att det alltid finns mer att lära, nyanser man missar. Så även med W.H. Audens Selected poems, som trots ett ofta ganska rakt tilltal och vers som ibland verkar strunta i naturlig rytm, ändå ibland är svårläst, inte bara på grund av att han ibland tycks ha suttit med ordböcker och förtjust plockat upp dialekt och arkaism.

Det finns ett förord, som ger en komprimerad bild av liv och litterär utveckling, och ett fåtal noter, som förklarar de mest obskyra orden och hänvisningarna, de man inte kan komma vidare utan. Oftafår dock läsaren själv plocka upp allusioner bäst den kan (vanligen är de inte nödvändiga för förståelse). Auden tycks ha börjat som vänsterpoet, men efter några år brutit upp, flyttat till USA och orienterat sig mer och mer mot kyrkan: en ganska lågmäld och nostalgisk religiositet, som fortsatt ställer honom på flyktingars och oskyldigas sida.

Han är stundom rolig, stundom krass, riktigt svårtillgänglig endast i allra första ungdomen: inte ens när han ger rollerna i Stormen chansen att tala igen och låter Caliban lägga ut orden över tjugo sidors mycket retorisk prosa blir det lika svårföljt som vissa andra poeters alster. Senare tar han också igen vad skada han nu å ha gjort med diktcykler över dagens timmar, dikter om njutningen i att sitta på dass, eller indignationen av att behöva visiteras på en flygplats: den sene Auden tycks mindre hämmad, och därmed mer intressant.… (mer)

Wystan Hugh Auden, född 21 februari 1907 i York, England, Storbritannien, död 29 september 1973 i Wien, Österrike, var en brittisk poet.

Auden studerade vid Gresham's School i Norfolk 1920-1925 och vid Christ Church, Oxford, 1925-1928. 1935 ingick han ett skenäktenskap med Erika Mann, för att hon skulle få brittiskt medborgarskap.[1] Efter att ha deltagit i spanska inbördeskriget kom han till USA 1939 och blev amerikansk medborgare 1946.
