Sarah and long-term boyfriend Tom are getting engaged to the utter dismay of Ginny, Sarah's supposedly best friend since boarding school. Ginny wants what Sarah has and thus, sets in motion a rather devious plan of action that slowly but surely is showing signs of success.
Ginny is seriously crazy. Most disgusting scene with a cat in a book ever (no cats are harmed).
Tom is a total drip, an investigative journalist who happens to be investigating the very issue that should shed light on his crumbling relationship. Parts of that scenario didn't work for me.
The inclusion of the story line with Tom's parents was quite interesting and helped to flesh out the characters, though it was a bit predictable.
This was a 3-star read for a lot of the time, but towards the end, the pace picked up and a surprising revelation about Ginny, which explained a lot about her behavior and which seemed plausible, catapulted it to 4 stars.
Overall, an entertaining, suspenseful story about mental health, family secrets and relationships.
I received an ARC via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

First of all, let me point out that I don't think that THE AFFAIR is really crime fiction, although Avieson's first novel APARTMENT 255, joint winner of the Ned Kelly Award for first fiction in 2002, was. And that is basically why I picked THE AFFAIR up from the Salvo's shelves earlier this week.

However there are mystery elements that are sustained well throughout the novel and quite a twist (actually a double twist) at the end that makes it a satisfying read.

One of the main threads of the novel is based on the call that Lloyds of London made on its Australian "names" in 1991 when it declared major losses in the years after 1988. You might like to do a little research reading here. Lloyds made a call for funds on its Australian "names" which threatened to bankrupt a number of family firms, including, in the novel, Wilde wines.

But the primary threads of the novel relate to Nina Wilde's affair, and that is why I say it isn't really crime fiction.
However I note the following

2003 - shortlisted for Ned Kelly Crime Writing Awards - Best Novel for The Affair
2004 - shortlisted for Ned Kelly Crime Writing Awards - Best Novel for The Wrong Door

A lovely tale of a woman who, on meeting an interesting man, goes from being a Sydney based journalist and novelist to a mother living in India, and then Bhutan, living with an interesting and caring local family who gives her an amazing insight into the 'hidden kingdom of the Dragon King'.

Avieson's writing is simple without being twee, humourous without trying too hard, and while she obviously has thought about the situations she found herself in and the differences between life in Bhutan and Australia, she never descends to the cod-philosophy that ruins much travel writing. Rather it feels like a friend making you a little jealous as she talks to you about an amazing period in her life.

The only problem with this book is it will make you wish to move in with a family in Bhutan, something that is not available to many of us.

Definitely don't judge a book by its cover. I read it in about 2 weeks. Good twist at the end, didn't see it coming. Recommended good read.
