Paolo Bacigalupi won the Hugo, Nebula, Locus, Compton Crook, and John W. Campbell Memorial Awards for his debut novel, The Windup Girl, which was published in 2009. His short story collection Pump Six and Other Stories was a 2008 Locus Award winner for Best Collection and his young adult novel Ship visa mer Breaker won the Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature and was finalist for the National Book Award. Spoken by one of the main characters, a Calorie Man who works for a multinational agribusiness, this quote aptly describe the world of The Windup Girl.
It's late 22nd century Thailand, the combustible fuel age is over, all energy is derived from labor, springs, and, essentially, calories. The western agribusinesses have destroyed most of the world's food supply, and control everything through sterile seed stock. Except in Thailand.
Bacigalupi has created such a believable world, one that is completely immersive, and yet one that does not overwhelm the story. Great SF book for/of our time.… (mer)
