This was a nice and complete short story with a fully fleshed-out set of characters and story arc. John, the old man and main character, is a character to quickly be endeared to. His stalwart faith and down-to-earth nature are the story's biggest driving forces. Sampson, whom John essentially rescues from death in a Good Samaritan parallel, is the outsider who brings the greater threat from the outside world to John's doorstep in the form of a biker gang Sampson stood up against. The plot follows learning about the two men as they learn about each other. John learns about Sampson's standing up and being kicked out of his biker crew and Sampson learning about what makes John someone to rescue a "bad dude" from death but not turn him into the police. John's Christian faith is in focus through the story without a doubt and culminates in a confrontation with evil.

Some readers of Christian fiction will enjoy the familiar plot beats seen in other books. Also, there are good action scenes (without gratuitous violence for the sake of violence). With the understanding that this is a short story, it would have been valuable to see more characterization of Sampson and his growth or change. Without spoilers, a big character change does seem to happen quickly because the story is coming to a climax and an end. John also tells Sampson the parable of the Good Samaritan and it would have worked better for the audience to put that together or maybe for Sampson to discover the parallel himself if the author wanted to make that clear to the audience.

The straightforward nature of the story is there for the purpose of focusing mainly on the two men. A few more details and a bit more subtlety would have been preferred but it's a good, simple story to enjoy in less than 100 pages. Final Grade - B

WoW! I was captivated by the opening!
“I’ve never trusted happiness. Just when you think you’ve corralled that mustang, she busts through the fence and leaves you with splinters. I should have seen it coming.”
I loved the author’s descriptive writing! Another top favorite was...
“Afternoon was punching its time card while evening waited to take the next shift.”
I truly saved one of the best selections until last as I traveled from sea-to-shining-sea for my 50 States Fiction Challenge! Looking over a list of novels set in Nebraska, the title caught my attention, and then the description reeled me in
“A Nebraska county sheriff’s wife investigates a murder—and her husband is the prime suspect.”
The sheriff’s wife, Kate Fox came into her family home expecting to see her niece Carly working on a term paper, and perhaps her husband Ted might already be home. But the house is dark and minutes later a phone call turns her world spiraling out of control.

The action keeps a steady pace but it is the descriptions and dialogue that keep the reader riveted from chapter to chapter. There is a large cast of secondary characters fitting for life in a small rural town in the Midwest where not only does everyone know everyone else’s business but some have that inside track because they are all related.

It is the authenticity in capturing the setting and the descriptive writing that moved this novel from 4 to 5 Stars for me. In signing up for the author’s newsletter, I received a link to download the short story “Close Enough” which takes place between Book 1 and Book 2. As the story gives additional insight into Kate Fox's next steps after Book 1 and insight into her character's choices and feelings for the path ahead, I highly recommend the novella. I hope you enjoy Shannon Baker’s writing as much as I did. I’m looking forward to reading more of the author’s writing.

After reading Stripped Bare Book 1 of the Kate Fox series, I subscribed to the author's newsletter. In the welcome email for joining the Reader's List a download link is available for the short story Close Enough. This story falls between Stripped Bare (Book 1) and Dark Signal (Book 2) and features Kate Fox on the eve of the election for sheriff.

As the story gives additional insight into Kate Fox's next steps after Book 1 and insight into her character's choices and feelings for the path ahead, I highly recommend downloading the link.

Note: When I first sent the file to my Kindle, I received the same message as provided at the end of the description on GoodReads: "At the Publisher's request, this title is being sold without Digital Rights Management Software (DRM) applied." Clicking on the book cover several times allowed me to open the short story. There is one paragraph that is repeated on the Kindle edition in its entirety only 2 paragraphs after it first appears and a sentence that is missing a word later in the story. The errors are annoying in the moment but the story is worth the read.

This was an action-packed fun read, with a southwest setting, a touch of Native American mysticism, and environmental issues.
