Jay Bakker, son of Jim and Tammy Faye and Emergent church guru wrote this book to describe his awakening to the concept of grace. Some good stuff here, and certainly I am always looking to grow in grace but I found myself unable to agree with many of his arguments because:

1. Seemed somewhat antinomian and dismissive of the Old Testament
2. His hermeneutic of scripture, especially as it it relates to LBGT people needs further unpacking
3. He repeats the common preacher error that 'Abba' means daddy which is not warranted by what we know of its Aramaic usage.

On the other hand, I appreciate his unfolding of his own story, and the struggles of others to come to terms with the fact that they are loved by God without having to do anything. Parts of Jay's story are quite compelling.

If you've grown up being taught that Christianity has all the right answers, and those answers look like they belong to evangelical Americans, this book will force you to see that God does not fit that stereotype. If you have been taught apologetics to defend your God, this book will convince you that God does not need defending. If you have never been free to doubt the limitations of the God you were taught, this book will free to find a bigger God then you ever imagined.

I found this book on a Borders liquidation sale shelf. I picked it up for a couple bucks and have been meaning to read it out of curiosity's sake and see if it really was a bunch of heresy or if there was anything salvageable about it. What is unfortunate for Borders bookstore became my own good fortune. Now that I have a "Summer Break" from school, I decided to give it a read.

I quite like this witty and honest son of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker and admire his Revolution ministry. In this book Jay Bakker focuses on grace vs. religious law particularly as written in Paul's letters with a special focus on Galatians. His passion for conveying that God's grace through Jesus's death is yours no matter what you've done or will do is evident in every word he writes. I highly recommend this book to the believer and doubter alike.
