Recensioner

The brief text accompanying each set of maps isn't enough to provide much context, and the maps themselves consist mostly of arrows pointing in all directions showing routes on invasions, etc. Nor are they particularly attractive maps to begin with. This book can be of some use while you are reading history (e.g., The Silk Roads by Peter Frankopan), but overall it is poorly designed and mostly a disappointment.

Edited by Geoffry Barraclough, with contributed chapters by Karl Bosl along with the other authors listed. K Bosl is not the main author, but I'm not going to mess with how this is currently set up in LT.
Book ends with bibliographical Notes, Sources of Illustrations, and Index.

This view have now become standard, but at the time they were just beginning to be developed. The book also includes a few more technical essays unrelated to the theme, notably one arguing that the medieval "Holy Roman Empire" was much less important as a major political structure than earlier writers (notably Bryce) had believed.… (mer)
