While the title suggests that this is only about this incident that occurred just before the Civil War, Baumann is really interested in how much Blacks were involved in the rescuet. In fact many Blacks were part of the crowd that freed the escaped slave from the grasp of the slave hunters. Some of them were escaped slaves themselves.
