Leo Baxendale was born in Whittle-le-Woods, Lancashire, United Kingdom on October 27, 1930. After serving in the Royal Air Force during World War II, he found work drawing adverts and cartoons for the Lancashire Evening Post. In 1953, he started working for the comic company Beano. While working visa mer there, he created the several characters including Minnie the Minx and the Bash Street Kids. In 1962, He became so overwhelmed by deadlines that he left Beano. He found work two years later with Wham! and Smash! comics in London. During the 1960s, he produced activist newsletter entitled The Strategic Commentary. In 1987, he founded the publishing house Reaper Books. He was inducted into the British Comic Awards Hall of Fame in 2013. He died from cancer on April 25, 2017 at the age of 86.
