Recensioner

Well, if you read A Modest Proposal in school then Tender is the Flesh will be pretty familiar to you. It was decently written, dark, bloody, and disgustingly human. Rated 3.5 but I can definitely say it won’t be leaving my thoughts for a damn while! For better or for worse.

It's a very unsubtle book - there's an early long chapter describing the slaughter of humans for meat which is so gross and descriptive it was overwhelming but could also have been pulled straight from any serious description of factory farming - but also it does a great job of just going through a bunch of obvious, unsubtle things about the concept of factory farming and eating humans and doesn't outstay its welcome. It's vile and unbearable and evil. The obvious analogies to both meat farming and the general churn of capitalism that kills an underclass for a different kind of consumption are very well written. It's unsubtle but it sets everything out with no missteps or stupid platitudes or any attempt to distance it from our reality or feel the need to be more explicit about the parallels than just showing the obvious. Great and horrible book… (mer)

“People are capable of anything to dissipate the monotony of their lives.”

I had heard so many great things about this book and therefore I was really looking forward to it. And it did not disappoint at all. This book was spooky, dark and creepy all at once! I swear each story seemed to just get darker and more twisted. Which I absolutely adore. Each story was super engaging and took a completely unexpected twist. I really forgot how much I enjoyed the way short stories can be kind of open ended and these were perfect.
I really love when a book looks at the dark side of people and I think this one does that. The book really explores a lot of different elements of human nature and the darker side of humanity. I really really enjoyed this book if you can’t tell and it’s one that sticks with you and has you thinking about the stories even when it’s over! If you haven’t read this one add it to your spooky reads list it’s quick and perfect!

This didn't do it for me. Most of the stories started strong, but they never expanded past the first idea. They felt underdeveloped, artificially padded out—which is saying something, considering how short most of them are. I can see fans of the author liking them, especially if they're not big readers of short fiction, but in general, I wouldn't recommend.

(thnx anyway NetGalley!)
