Here’s a book full of insight about depression. Even though about 1 in 5 people suffering this debilitating condition, ignorance is high – many are reluctant or even unable to talk about it, and those around them can fear to ask.

Richard Beeston wrote this book about his wife’s experience of depression and her recovery to address that ignorance and offer realistic hope. It is well told in 70 well spaced pages of plain and simple writing. He believes that depression has spiritual, mental and physical aspects, and any treatment needs to address these interconnected factors. Richard offers no glib or naïve answers, but instead discusses his experiences in a fresh, open and reflective way. As he does, he offers resources for learning more, useful tips for friends and supporters, and reflections on the value of suffering for the Christian. Alison adds her own reflections in a final chapter.

In many ways it is similar to Lee Hatcher’s book about chronic fatigue, “I’m Not Crazy, I’m Just a Little Unwell” – a sufferer’s account told to help us understand and care for them better. Quite a few people in our church have or have had depression. Everyone of us would benefit from reading it, whether suffers or not.
