Summary:
This is a classic tale of the red hen who wants to plant some corn. She asks all her friends to help in with every task, but none of them are willing to help. The little red hen decides to do all the work herself. After she spends her time planting, cutting, shucking, and cooking the corn all by herself then her friends decide they would like to eat some of the corn. She reminds them that they didn't help her when she asked and now she isn't going to let them help her eat the corn.

Personal Reaction:
I love this book! I remember the version that has the little red hen baking bread. It was nice to read a different version. The pictures are simple and gives you the feeling it is an old classic.

Classroom Extension Ideas:
1. I can talk with the students about the importance of helping friends. Students can share how they can help their friends.

2. I can print out the animals from the story. Students can color the animals and glue them on popsicle sticks. Then students can retale the story with the puppets they made.

Summary
The book was about a hen that wanted help planting some corn. The hen asks a rat, cat, and dog. To help with the planting, shucking and cooking. They were all too busy to help until it came time to eat. So the hen ate alone.

Personal Reaction: If you want something in your life. Your going to have to put in your share of the work. Things in life are not going to just be given to you that are only when you are a child.

Classroom Extension Ideas
1.Ask class what are some of thier favorite foods that are plants and talk about them.
2.Ask the class if they have ever planted any food and how much work they had to do till they could eat it.

A little red hen had a seed. She decided to plant the seed. She asked her friends for help, but no one wanted to help. The seed grew into a corn plant. When it came time to cut the corn, no one wanted to help her then either. The little hen decided to cook the corn, and then all her friens came forward wanting to help the little hen eat the corn. The little hen simply told them since they did not help with the corn, she would be enjoying the corn on her own, and she did!

This book is so true in so many situations in life. It seems you cannot get any help when work is involved, but when it comes time to reap the benefits of the hard work, everyone wants a piece of the pie.

The classroom could decide on something to bake. They would work together as a team, and then enjoy eating it as a team. Discuss how things might be hard work, but it pays off in the end.
