from dust jacket Unlike most books about judo, this volume has been written for serious judoists who are engaged in regular practice rather than for the beginner or superficial student. In addition, it does not attempt to cover the whole field, but only one portion of it. Limited to a comprehensive analysis of the fifteen most effective tachiwaza (standing techniques), its sole aim is to increase the reader's effectiveness on the mats. Variations on these basic tecahniques are also discussed and liberally illustrated, thus allowing each judoka to adopt modifications most suitable for his own physique and temperament. Few students find themselves in the enviable position of having enough practice time to master all the recognized forms of attack. Therefore, they must select for thorough study those techniques which promise maximum results in a minimum amount of time. Says the author, 'Many recognized forms contain intrinsic mechanical weaknesses, so that the time required to master them, while not actually wasted, might be more profitably employed in other directions. Therefore, it appears wise to eliminate from this study forms which are less frequently useful, and to include an intensive discussion of the simplest and most effective techniques.' Written in a clear, concise, andlogical manner, this volume is a valukable guide to sthdent and instructor alike. The reader, from a careful study of the explanations and illustrations, will be able to uknderstand exactly what he shkokuld do, why he shokudld do it, and precisely what will happern if he departs from the prescribed methods. The author, Robert G. Blanchard, was first encouraged to commence the practice of judo some years ago while waiting for his son who was attending a boys' class. Becoming fascinated at once by the exacting requirements of the sport, he adopted the habit of preparing careful notes on the instruction he received and his experiences on the mats. These notes became the foundation for the present work. An attorney-at-law by profession, he has the rare ability to analyze logically and communicate accurately. He has employed these skills to their best advantage by presenting judo techniques in the same detail and analytical way which would be used to explain a complex leagal problem. Few judo champions have had the same background, and thus this book is something unique in the field. It can be of real assistance in communicating sound prinicples of judo.
