Kort biografi
Cheryl Lanham was born on 11 October 1948 in the Appalachian mountains of West Virginia, USA. Her family moved to Southern California in 1959 and she grew up in Pasadena. After graduating from California State University, she decided to work her way around the world and took off for England. She didn’t get much further because she met Richard James Arguile, the Englishman who became her husband, got married on May 1976, and had two children, Matthew and Amanda. While working in international shipping, she decided to pursue her dream and become a writer – which, of course, is the best job ever. She has written romance novels as Sarah Temple, and Young Adult novels as Cheryl Lanham. As Emily Brightwell, she is the author of the “Mrs. Jeffries” mysteries.

Cheryl Lanham Arguile returned to California, where she lives with her husband and a cranky old cat named Kiwi.

When a woman is killed in her own home, it just so happens that Chief Inspector Barrows is leaving the house next door as the butler runs out to summon the police. Clearly he has the duty to check the scene, which appears to suggest a burglary gone wrong, a crime that would be handled by Scotland Yard’s best burglary expert, Inspector Nevins. But the Chief Inspector feels that something is slightly off about the scenario, so he asks Inspector Witherspoon to take a look, and it is that person’s opinion that the crime was a murder meant to be taken as a burglary-gone-wrong. In no time, his staff at home is on the look-out for clues, and they are beginning to get somewhere when Inspector Nevins pulls some political strings and gets the Chief Inspector to take Inspector Witherspoon off the case. But how can the staff stop investigating when doing so will mean a murderer goes free?.... The 11th book in this long-running series shows that Inspector Witherspoon is indeed becoming a better detective, particularly as he starts to understand why his instincts tell him that this is a murder case. We again learn a bit more about the former lives of the various staff members of the Inspector’s household, and are beginning to inch toward a possible revelation about the coachman, Smythe, which I for one can’t wait to learn. While it’s not necessary to read these books in order, the reader’s understanding of the characters and their developing relationships is richer for doing so; recommended.… (mer)

On opening night of a new play, several people are surprised to see a noted, and notably hated, theatre critic in the audience; after all, he was supposed to be in America for another three months, not back in London! And when the critic is found dead in a canal, apparently drowned in his bathtub and then hauled to the outside waters, nobody is likely to mourn him. For Inspector Gerald Witherspoon of Scotland Yard, it is yet another baffling case with all too many suspects and too few clues; for his housekeeper Mrs. Jeffries and the household staff, it is a chance to rebuild their confidence in sleuthing after their last bitter failure…. The tenth book in this series, set in Victorian London, carries on the interesting mix of social classes in that time and place, from the wealthy and titled to the artistic mid-range to the servant class to the inhabitants of brothels and opium dens; I like how the author includes all of these differing milieus without passing judgment, and I like that the servants of the Inspector are themselves a bit of a socioeconomic microcosm as well. I don’t think one needs to read all of these books in order; although each provides a little bit more information about the characters’ backgrounds and their relationships, these tidbits are not essential to the immediate story and can be picked up on later if the reader so chooses; recommended.… (mer)

When a publican is murdered in his own pub on opening day (his birthday to boot!), Scotland Yard Inspector Gerald Witherspoon is assigned to investigate; the problem is that there were a lot of people in the pub, a huge percentage of those people had reason to hate the publican, and everybody’s attention had been drawn away at the crucial moment, in order to watch a fight that was unfolding in the street outside. Mrs. Jeffries, housekeeper to the Inspector, and her fellow servants - Betsy the maid, Wiggins the footman, Smythe the coachman and Mrs. Goodge the cook - are ready to help with the investigation, but this time the Inspector is keeping the details of the crime to himself and following his own “inner voice” to solve the case. But if the Inspector follows his instincts, it’s sure that the culprit will go free and he himself will be back in the records room in disgrace in no time - and Mrs. Jeffries can’t let that happen…. The ninth book in the long-running Victorian cozy series holds several surprises, in particular the fact that the Inspector, hitherto an endearing, very kind but not too intelligent character, seems to finally be developing a detective’s sensibility and instinct! Very enjoyable, especially because the suspects in this case range through a good portion, if not the entirety, of the English social classes of the time, which the author does a good job of depicting without resorting to worn-out cliches. Recommended.… (mer)

A businessman has been killed, apparently by someone who introduced himself as….Inspector Gerald Witherspoon of Scotland Yard! Of course it wasn’t really him, but Inspector Nevin is given the task of finding out who the murderer actually was, which is a problem because Nevin is such a nincompoop that not even Constable Barnes can help him. Naturally Mrs. Jeffries and the rest of Inspector Witherspoon’s household staff are very keen to solve the crime as quickly as possible, but they are having difficulty finding clues - and the Inspector keeps going for long walks at the most guilt-suggesting times…. The eighth book in the “Mrs. Jeffries” cozy series is a bit more fraught than the earlier stories, because there’s a real danger that the household might be unable to solve the crime in time to prevent the arrest (or worse!) of the gentle Inspector. The reader also learns more about the background of some of the staff, and there’s romance in the air for more than one couple. This series is a lot of fun and the period setting (mid-Victorian London) is well-rendered, even in its less salubrious sectors; recommended.… (mer)
