I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. Sariel Baldwin is taken in by her uncle Harold after her parents dies in a fatal car crash. She feels that although he doesn’t behave as a parent, that he’s taken he in because of his love of family. Then we meet Alexander, who feels an instant connection to Sariel, added to that she can see him when hidden from everyone else. Humans are not supposed to be capable of that. What will Sariel do when she finds out she’s half demon? Who can she trust?

This was a pretty good book once you get past the first third. Sariel’s character go to me in the beginning as she was always angry about something. I liked the chemistry between Alexander and Sariel, but if you’re expecting a romance novel, this certainly is not one. If you like fantasy novels, this is a good book for you.

First off, let me start by saying this is an incredibly engaging short story. It isn’t quite long enough to be a novella, but still manages to, as I heard Collum McCann state, implode in the impact and impression: striking every chord with little effort by the reader.

This story has an Ifrit, if you watched this season’s True Blood and Terry Bellefleur’s story: you saw an Ifrit in the form of a fire wielding demon. The Ifrit is attempting to avenge an evil unpaid for, that encounters and finds a need to protect a new to her powers half demon. While this story is quick to read, the impact and intermingling of believed skills of the demons with a credible “real world” storyline manage to convey a complete and finished story. Yes, the characters are limited in their development because of the brevity of the piece, but as an introduction to a series involving the Ifrit and a half demon, it is near on perfection. I really can’t wait for the second installment in this story – due out in September 2012.
