Recensioner

There are so many negative comments about this book. This book was not a biography or autobiography but a fictional book with fictional people. I think it was written beautifully through the eyes of the lead character, Val. This is the first book that I have read by Jennifer Brown and I plan on pursuing the rest of her books.

Read it in one night... Cried like a baby... It's AMAZING and heartbreaking

Jersey has lived through a natural disaster and she's lost everything... literally everything. Her home, her town, her family. Now she's being taken in by relatives who don't really want her and who she really doesn't know. She's learning things about her mother's past that she never knew. And finding out hard truths about her future.

My Thoughts:
THIS BOOK!!! You know how there are some books that make you cry at the end? Well this is not one of those books. This is one of those books where you sob the entire way through. Okay well at least I did. I was a hot mess while I read this book. Luckily I read the entire thing in one night in the privacy of my own room... because if I would have taken this to read out in public, I would have severely embarrassed myself.

This book is about Jersey who lives in Missouri, and has just lived through a devastating tornado. It literally flattens a large portion of her town. And now she's all alone. Her mom and little sister were at dance class and they never made it home. It was so heartbreaking to read about this little 5 year-old girl dying before she ever got to really live a life. Then after that the book is permeated with ALONENESS. Jersey is left with no belongings and no one who even cares about her at all. I just wanted to crawl into this book and give her a big hug!!

This book weirdly made me feel a lot like how I felt when I read The Fault in Our Stars and Forgive Me, Leonard Peacock. It made me question humanity and wonder why we treat each other like this!! I know there are good people out there, but seriously there aren't enough! So many people let this girl down, it made me sick. I don't want to give too much away or ruin the surprise factor for you... but I was pissed off and sad at the same time for most of the book.

Jennifer Brown's books have all been favorites of mine. I especially loved The Hate List. Torn Away is giving that a run for it's money. It's much shorter, but it's super powerful. It's definitely one of my favorite books I've read this year!

OVERALL: A heartbreaking, sobfest about a girl who loses her family and her home in devastating tornado. I was looking forward to a new Jennifer Brown book, and this one did not disappoint. I cried like a baby and loved every second of it.

When Ashleigh thinks about her boyfriend Kaleb going off to college, she's filled with anxiety. What if he forgets all about her? So one drunken night she decides to send him a picture that's sure to keep her in his mind... a picture of herself: naked.

But Kaleb has always been a little inattentive and distracted and when he goes to college it only gets worse, leading to a bad breakup. When Kaleb forwards the text to some friends as a way of revenge, it completely spirals out of control. Soon everyone has seen the picture, even Ashleigh's dad, the superintendent of her school.

The photo becomes a huge scandal in Ashleigh's town and everyone is trying to distance themselves from it, and from her. Ashleigh feels completely humiliated and alone and now has to attend court-ordered community service. She doesn't know what to think about being betrayed so badly and doesn't know why everyone is blaming her. It's not like she wanted the whole world to see her naked. She's so busy apologizing and hiding from the nasty comments that she loses sight of who she even really is.

I am a big Jennifer Brown fan... so this book was on my radar from day one. Now that I've read the book, I'm happy to say it lived up to my Jennifer Brown expectations!! It's definitely an "issues book" but it's not one that's been done to death. Sexting is a really big issue that some people don't realize the full consequences of. Once something is digital it can live forever. Things you post or videos/pictures you've taken can go viral or surface years later and cause humiliation, hurt feelings, and even lost jobs.

This book dives right into the issue of the unintended consequences that sexting can have. I kept thinking that the consequences for Ashleigh seemed a little too severe, but then I remember that it has happened. I've heard numerous cases of girls who have made national news for their pics getting out.

The best part of this book was when Ashleigh was going through the fallout and realized that she was all alone. The feeling that was in this part of the book hurt my heart. Like her parents really weren't being supportive, her friends dropped her, and the guy she trusted for the last year had ruined her life. Everyone was just coming down on her so hard and they wouldn't let up. The school, her coach, her peers, their parents, her parents: everyone was out to blame her for something she never wanted to happen. Yes she took the picture, but it was for her boyfriend! He's the douche here... not her. And yes he had consequences too, but at least he deserved them. I just felt and felt and felt for this girl.

One thing that bugged me was the maturity level. The conversations between Kaleb and Ashleigh were kind of hard to read at times because they were so immature. Having said that though, I sort of loved that it was like that because it made it feel real. At that age I totally had fights with my boyfriend that made me look dumb. I can remember fighting with an ex-boyfriend and bringing up old fights in the middle of new fights all the time. It's like the #1 immature thing that you can do in a relationship. But it is the reality of teen relationships. And I love that Jennifer Brown captures the teen voice so authentically.

I really enjoyed reading about this topic because it reminds me how much easier I had it growing up in the 90's. We had to call someones landline and actually ask their parents if they were home and could talk. It made it a lot more difficult to communicate with boys. But I think it was a good thing. Texting and Facebooking makes it so easy to have the balls to put yourself out there. Without those things we really got to know people before communicating with them. I think that is a lot safer... and better on your heart. So yeah, i found it super interesting to see this girl get bullied via text and Internet knowing that half of those people wouldn't be saying anything if they had to do it face to face.

The only thing I really wanted was more! It definitely could've been 50 pages longer.

Overall: I LOVE Jennifer Brown! You should definitely pick up this issues book about a really relevant topic. It's a book about friendship and finding yourself through really hard times. It's deep, but it's kind of fun at the same time.

Alex, whose mother died when she was quite young, is on a mission to go to the place her mother was headed when she died: Colorado. She's been making plans to do so with her 2 BFF's Zack and Bethany since forever.... but then she meets Cole. Cole is the new guy. He sings to her, complements her on her poetry, and always seems to be around. It makes Alex feel good... like for the first time in her life someone understands her. But Cole isn't exactly what he seems. He's jealous of her friendship w/ Bethany and Zack (especially Zack). He starts showing up at all her work shifts, trying to control her every move, and eventually he starts physically and emotionally abusing her. At first she tries to justify it by telling herself he was just stressed (his home life is far from perfect, so that has to be the reason right?), but then after promising he'll never do it again, he does. And Alex starts wondering just how much she is willing to risk for love.

This book was great! I really really got into it. Jennifer Brown's writing is so easy to get lost in!!

I have to admit I connected with this book because I was in an extremely emotionally abusive relationship which was exactly like Alex & Cole's but without the bruises/broken bones/teeth. I lived through it and can honestly say I am embarrassed by how much I allowed someone to control me... I mean ME! I am the biggest b*tch some of you would ever meet, and I let some guy tell me what to wear and who to talk to and even what to look at while I was out in public! I seriously believe it can happen to anyone if you meet that person at the right time in your life and they wean you into it. People like Cole are masters at their trade... they know what to do to keep you coming back and make you think it's YOUR fault. The best advice I can give (and I'm NO expert) is that you have to know that there are other people out there for you... you will find love again. Because that's what keeps people tied to these people, it's the love thing.

But back to the book. I loved the book and the message it sent was awesome. I liked how the wedge in the 3-way friendship led Alex to feel like even if she wanted out, no one would be there to help her. It made the whole thing more real. The only thing is I wish we got to know Alex a little bit more before she met Cole. It kind of felt like the idea of the book came first and then the characters... I would've preferred just a little bit more depth there. Besides that it was a great follow up to The Hate List!! (I have to say though I kind of liked Hate List a smidge more)
