Science-fiction writer and novelist Octavia Estelle Butler was born in Pasadena, California, on June 22, 1947. She earned as Associate of Arts degree from Pasadena City College in 1968 and later attended California State University and the University of California. Her first novel, Patternmaster, visa mer was the first in a series about a society run by a group of telepaths who are mentally linked to one another. She explored the topics of race, poverty, politics, religion, and human nature in her works. She won a Hugo Award in 1984 for her short story Speech Sounds and a Hugo Award and Nebula Award in 1985 for her novella Bloodchild. She received a MacArthur Grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The award pays $295,000 over a five-year period to creative people who push the boundaries of their fields. Very good. Felt very close to our soon to be present. In fact it takes place in ~2025. Very violent but hopeful. Good read.

Kindred av Octavia E. Butler

Set in 1976 California, Kindred is the story of a 26-year-old black woman who disappears from her home and is transported to 1819 Maryland. She saves a white boy named Rufus from drowning then is immediately brought back to her present. Dana returns to the past again and again, each time staying for longer and under more dangerous circumstances.

Adulthood Rites (Lilith's Brood, 2) av Octavia E. Butler

Good. The mind of Butler was whoo!

I was fully immersed in the story and watching Akin’s journey of becoming something not quite human or alien. But this was very slow-moving and long-winded, so I found myself getting fatigued. I don’t think I’ll finish this trilogy, at least no time soon, but it’s not bad at all.

The humans here are so distinctly human that they’re frustrating.
