Carlton's series of veterinarian stories is one I turn to when I want to read gentle humor, to feel a quiet love of animals, and to learn more about Texas life. This book was a good read just before bed, with its short chapters and peaceful look at life, well for the most part.

It is only since moving to Texas that I have truly come to understand the danger of a grassfire. With the expanse of unbroken land, the fire can spread widely and quickly. With the wind to fan it and spread sparks, the speed and heat of the fire can become deadly. Sadly, people and animals can be injured or killed in grassfires. Without knowing the outcome from the start, stories of fires can be worrisome.

I think this book is appropriate for adults and young adults who might be interested in animals and their veterinarians. I would recommend it highly.

This Texas veterinarian has a way of telling down-to-earth stories that amuse me. He manages to work in some interesting facts about animals that I appreciate. Most of the stories are "feel good" stories and fairly short, so it is perfect for reading when you know you'll be interrupted at some point. While focused on animals, it also gives a glimpse into the rural life around Dallas.

You don't have to have read Carlton's other books to enjoy this one. It is recommended for people who love animals and is suited for young adults.… (mer)

I got this book on the strength of Dallas Doc. While I am glad I did read it, I don't think it was as strong as the first book. What I loved were the descriptions of the people. Carlton has a gift for creating down-to-earth verbal descriptions that let the reader know just the kind of person he is meeting. One of my favorites is "That sleazy character would sell scales to a fish before guttin' him alive." The other is "Though she was as brash and ostentatious as the bubbling, gold Cupid fountain in her foyer, I still couldn’t fault Linda’s current lifestyle."

What comes through is the genuine affection Carlton has for his animal patients and for the people in their lives. Many times there is a lesson to be learned, whether it is standing up for what you believe or this home truth: "You’re stuck on how ya think we should be…instead of acceptin' us as we are... Money and show…they don’t mean nothin’, sonny…they ain't what’s real."

Yes, I have bought the sequel and will read it when I need a dose of kindness and real life. If you liked Dallas Doc, you will almost surely like this book.

I enjoyed the stories in this book. While they started out short, by the end it felt like the vet had gotten into the swing of story-telling. Many of the stories were humorous, but there were sad ones, too. The humor is many times country humor and very Texan. I have already ordered the next book.

People who like animals would probably like this book. Young people considering a career as a veterinarian should read it. If you liked Crowded in the Middle of Nowhere by Bo Brock, you will most likely like this book, too.… (mer)
