I actually grabbed the audiobook from the library as well. Figured I'd review both, rather than just the book alone. The table of contents makes it easy to look up a particular skill and they are organized by groups:

guys & dating
social skills & manners
work & ethics
wealth & money management
health & beauty
clothes & fashion
sports & recreation
cars & driving
food & cooking
tools & fix-it
Still, the book covers just about everything, from dating etiquette to tipping servers, cleaning bathrooms to making beds. This book is packed with daily chores or experiences that will be new to any young teen and it will save them some frustration if they know going in what's expected. For example, when I was younger, I struggled with tipping because I had no idea what was expected. I mean, I knew about tipping a server in a restaurant, but what about the valet or hotel housekeeping?

Thanks to 4H (like Scouts, but for boys and girls), I learned not only how to set a table properly, but I won a few blue ribbons in the local fair competitions. This book covers that, setting the fork, knife, spoon and so on. This may seem outdated as most either eat out or eat while watching TV, but I think it may still come in handy, especially when hosting a dinner party or having company come over for dinner. As a teen, this isn't necessarily an issue, but it will be that bit of information stored now for later use.

296 pages of helpful advice, this would make a great reference for teenagers to have handy in their home library. The car and fix-it sections alone make this book a worthwhile purchase. Some of the skills may be obvious and unnecessary, but the author can't assume that the reader knows everything. I mean, that's the point of this book, right? I received a complimentary copy from Revell in exchange for my honest opinion. The audiobook I checked out from the library was ok. I didn't love it. In fact, most of it was bland and more like lists of things to do or accomplish towards a bigger goal, like an Ikea manual. Ok, maybe I exaggerated a bit, but after listening to it, I really can't imagine any young teen girl (or older teen for that matter) would stick around to listen all the way through to the end. So while I can't recommend the audiobook as it is way too dull with list after list, I do recommend the book as a guide to have available in the home.

The Book: The Girls’ Guide To Conquering Life: How To Ace An Interview, Change A Tire, Talk To A Guy, And 97 Other Skills You Need To Thrive by Erica and Jonathon Catherman is a fun and witty advice book for young women. It’s formatted in a lovely way…chapters of advice…small illustrations and visual guides….told in a way that is not meant to be silly but rather light-hearted with actual meaning towards the advice given. Does that make sense? Whimsical…that’s what I mean. It gives actual sound advice but it has such a mild air to it that it felt whimsical at times. There is nothing harsh about the book. There isn’t any real serious topics...no diving into deep waters. I am not sure if I appreciated that…or missed it. Either way…it covered basics and it made a point to give actual advice and tips which makes for a great gift to someone’s elses daughter that you don’t or can’t step over boundaries with. There is not a need to feel that there is any agendas pushed on someone. It’s just a lovely self-help book geared towards young ladies and that’s it.

A great read. Highly recommend.

A big thanks to the peeps over at Revell Reads/Baker Publishing for my free copy of this book. I received. I read. I reviewed this book honestly and voluntarily.

I received this book for free from the publisher (Revell Books Nonfiction) in exchange for an honest review.

I was super excited to read this book because next month I will be moving and living on my own, and I could surely use all the help and advice I can get!

I think the book is aimed towards high school girls, and maybe early college girls. As someone who is starting law school, this book probably wasn’t meant for me. Nevertheless, I did find some of it useful. But when it came down to it, some parts of the book worked and some parts didn’t.

Some of the how-to’s weren’t that helpful. Quite a few of them were no-duh instructions. For example, How To Fill Out An application was pretty much common sense. The first couple of sections had a lot of how-to’s like that.

I found the later sections to be more helpful, particularly the ones pertaining to driving, cooking, and repairs. Those were more relevant to my needs.

It is worth noting that since this comes from a Christian publisher, the dating section was very heteronormative. Aside from that, there wasn’t anything that was Christian specific. There was nothing about God or praying or anything along those lines.

Overall, this is a good guidebook for teens, and depending on your needs, college-aged women.

This husband and wife team set out to create a book that encased everything a girl, becoming a woman, needs to know. They did this through ten essential categories, detailing “How To” steps, with varying anecdotes scattered throughout the chapters. These “How To” stages are simplistic enough for a younger audience, while successfully keeping the topics light and understandable. The pictures included at the beginning of each kept the book from becoming too dense as the introductions to each category provided insights into why the authors determined each of the subject matters as important for young women.

My only hesitations were the prehistoric references. For instance, chapter one on “Guys & Dating” does not discuss the changing dating environment with modern technology and dating apps. It’s also important for the authors to cater to the target audience. Studies find most young women/girls, particularly those generations targeted by this book, have attention spans of a matter of seconds. Given this, and after reading The Girls’ Guide to Conquering Life, I didn’t encounter a solid reason why any female should choose to READ this book rather than YouTube each “How To.” As a young adult that recently renovated an entire house, without hired help, the wonders of YouTube and quick videos serve to teach more efficiently than reading, no matter how simplistic the steps are.
