Soman Chainani is a graduate of the MFA Film Program at Columbia University, and the recipient of the school's top prize, the FMI Fellowship for Writing and Directing. His short films, DAVY & STU and KALI MA, have played over 150 international film festivals, won over 30 jury and audience awards, visa mer and racked up over 1,000,000 YouTube hits. His writing awards include honors from Big Bear Lake, the Sun Valley Writer's Fellowship, and the coveted Shasha Grant, awarded by a jury of international film executives. He was also nominated for a NewNowNext Award, sponsored by MTV. Chainani graduated Harvard University summa cum laude, with a degree in English & American Literature. While at Harvard, he focused on fairy tales and wrote his thesis on why evil women make such irresistible fairy-tale villains, winning the Thomas Hoopes Prize and Briggs Prize for his work. Chainani's first novel, The School For Good And Evil, also the title of his trilogy, debuted on the New York Times Bestseller List, has been on ABA's National Indie Bestseller List, has been translated into languages across six continents, and will soon be a major motion picture from Universal Studios. Very chaotic, I did not enjoy this book at all, it is nowhere near the level of the Harry Potter series, by J.K. Rowling, or the Keeper of the Lost Cities series, by Shannon Messenger, go read those instead for a better story about a fantasy boarding school. It starts with the main characters Sophie and Agatha and Sophie wanted to be put on the Good side whereas Agatha wanted to be on the Evil side but much to their surprise they got the opposite of what they wanted which is a cheap way to pull of a plot twist. This novel ultimately wasn't enjoyable because both sides of the school kept fighting over each other, and even started a war however at least that made the book more action-packed. The apparently "Good" side turned out to be just as bad as the Evil side because they wanted to kill them. The students also experienced harsh abuse in the school as well, such as the burning iron shoes and the failure system which I didn't like. There were flashes of good moments interspersed in this book however that did not do enough for me to put this above 3 stars. The two main characters were just unlikeable, underdeveloped and kept fighting over each other just like the rest of the school however now that I think about it that was the entire point of the story so there's that.… (mer)

A dark and melancholic collection of fairy tale retellings.
I did not like this book. I thought it was going to deconstruct old fashioned gender stereotypes, but it kept swerving around and hitting them head on. Not a fun read.
