Pierre Christin

George Orwell fue uno de los escritores más relevantes del s. XX, creador de obras como Rebelión en la granja o 1984, de la que proviene el concepto de “Gran Hermano”. Su fuerte compromiso político le llevó además a implicarse en la Guerra Civil Española junto a las milicias del POUM, experiencia que plasmó en su Homenaje a Cataluña.

En esta novela gráfica, Pierre Christin -guionista de la mítica Valerian- y Sébastien Verdier nos muestran los aspectos más relevantes de la vida del escritor y cómo estos configuraron la obra literaria orwelliana. Ambassador of the Shadows, first book in this collection, is where the Valerian series really starts to come into its own, I think. As did Luc Besson, as it forms the lion's share of the film adaptation of the series. It introduces some key characters and concepts into the series, and doesn't just feature Valerian and Laureline running off on space-themed adventures, as most of the other stories up until this one featured. Those are good too, but this overarching story is where the series really shines.

It's around this point of the series that I sort-of found myself committed to it. I'm up to volume 6 at the time of writing, and there's only one left. Worth every penny, especially in these beautiful hardback formats with interviews and other ephemera included at the front of the books.… (mer)

These are the first Valerian books that were published without having been serialized in a magazine first, so they're a bit longer than the previous ones, which is nice. And the series is definitely a lot more mature, in the sense that it's grown up and found its feet.

This volume compared to the last goes back to some swashbuckling tales, and one with flying taxis that definitely, 100% inspired The Fifth Element (as if I needed it, this is confirmed in the article at the front of the book that's always worth reading). It's good to get some new background to the making of one of your favourite movies.… (mer)
