Joanna Cole was born in Newark, New Jersey on August 11, 1944. She attended the University of Massachusetts, Indiana University, and City College of New York where she earned a degree in Psychology. Ms. Cole has worked as an elementary school teacher, a librarian, and a children's book editor. As a visa mer child, she loved science and explaining things and this is why she started writing children's books. She writes fiction and non-fiction titles. Her most well-known series are the Magic School Bus and the "Body." Cole's books have received a number of honors. A Horse's Body and A Snake's Body were both named Outstanding Science Trade Books for children by the joint committee of the National Science Teachers Association and the Children's Book Council. In 1982, A Snake's Body was named a Children's Choice Book by the joint committee of the International Reading Association and the Children's Book Council. Both A Cat's Body and A Bird's Body were Junior Literary Guild selections. In 1991, she was awarded the Washington Post/Children's Book Guild Nonfiction award. This story gives students a realistic look to the inside of the earth with pictures and diagrams to detail each part. Students can learn science and different rock forms and the layers of the Earth with this story.

I probably read this book dozens if not hundreds of times during potty training, and it is so well done, I never got tired of it. Twenty-some years down the road, it now has nostalgic appeal.

A grab-bag of random trivia about animals and insects culled from fact pages from The Magic School Bus chapter book series.
My daughter never got that much into that particular series, but this little pamphlet was a Christmas gift from her second grade teacher.

I literally fell asleep reading this collection of jump-rope rhymes, most of which are between two to four lines in length. I guess lying on the sofa keeps them from being as stimulating as when one is jumping and hopping as fast as one can.
As a comic strip buff, I did find it interesting that rhymes about Popeye and Blondie and Dagwood Bumstead made it into the folklore, but that was as good as it got for me.
