Fabrice Colin

This was one of my first French SFF books, bought early 2015. The good thing was: It's an omnibus, so I didn't have to buy all three books (if they're still available, of course). Then again, it's a cheap version, which means thin paper and cover. But that's what you get with mass market paperbacks.

Anyway, the concept of mixing Norse mythology and Fantasy looked very interesting to me, so I didn't really hesitate to add this book to my collection. Fabrice Colin seems to have invested a lot of time and effort to come up with a good story that deals with religion, friendship, life, ... He probably also read Tolkien's work, especially LOTR, as here too there's a ring that needs to be destroyed to restore peace and normal life.

This is a story that was spread over three books, as most is revealed and concluded in the third book, but not without adding tension here and there. It started well, I thought, with the first book. A very nice story with Janes Oelsen playing the leading role. He comes across as arrogant, as if nothing can harm him and as if he's the man. Well... he is, he is protected somehow, as he knows no fear, is immortal one way or another, and has an important quest to fulfil, so that the battle between the Faeders and the Dragons over who gets to control Midgard (realm of man) escalates into, yes, Ragnarök. Those who can flee, can go back to Asgard, the other ones have to fight or die.

In the end, even the gods themselves want all this to end, as Wultan is power-hungry, craves it so much, he desperately wants to rule in Midgard and thus control the people, the believers in the gods (Faeders). Janes is there to put a halt on this, but experiences some rough adventures and battles, also in the underworld, while in between falling in love, losing his brother (or does he?) and his parents, and so on. We also learn that Janes isn't really human after all, or definitely not 100%: Le fils des ténèbres, the son of the dark.

Especially in the third book, Fabrice Colin seems to criticize religion (in this case the old, pagan one, but probably at the same time the other ones that involve gods), as it always/mostly ends in war, the fight for power, and as a result, the people having to pay/suffer for it. That's at least how I interpreted his words, the way he told the story, wrote the dialogues.

There's a little map and list of the gods in the beginning of the book, a who's who.

All in all, this was an entertaining read and quite original, I must say. Sometimes a drag, but that could be due to external circumstances.

Important note: Vocabulary. It's vital to have a good knowledge of the French language to be able to read on. That way, you don't always have to interrupt your reading to look up the more literary words, but you can try to deduce some of them from the context.… (mer)

Un écrivain, Hades Shufflin, que l'inspiration fuit alors que le prochain tome de sa série à succès (récompensée de prix Nebula, Locus et hugo) est pré-vendu pour être tourné par Stanley Kubrick. Kubrick justement qui après Eyes Wide Shut a tourné un Napoléon radical. Une histoire d'amour étrange avec une femme disparaissante. Et finalement le livre qui prend vie à l'intérieur du livre, à moins que ce ne soit le film tourné par Kubrick ?

La première partie est impressionniste, accumulant de petites touches qui laissent entrevoir la folie de Hades Shufflin : extraits de ses livres, dessins issus de ses cahiers, interviews, thèse d'un admirateur, témoignages, récits parallèles schizophréniques... Impressionniste et impressionnante.

Le livre dans le livre est trépidant mais abuse des caméras. Je préfère quand on ne les voit pas (bizarrement il n'y a pas de caméramen).

C'est Philip K. Dick que m'a évoqué ce livre. Celui du Maître du Haut Château et de Radio libre Albemuth. Avec de tels auspices et une histoire qui bouscule le lecteur comme ça, difficile de ne pas aimer.… (mer)

Il est de notoriété publique que Fabrice Colin est un fan invétéré de Radiohead. Aussi il n’est pas surprenant que celui-ci lui consacre un de ses romans, peut-être plus surprenant en revanche que ce roman aborde avec mordant, voire férocité, le phénomène du fan. Car Big fan est avant tout l’histoire de William Madlock, un jeune anglais déséquilibré qui va étalonner toute sa vie sur les Cinq d’Oxford dès la sortie de leur premier album.

Colin a croqué avec talent cette thématique en entremêlant trois récits distincts qui finissent par se rejoindre. Il y a d’abord la vie en accéléré de ce William Madlock, élevé par un père alcoolique et absent et une mère pensant que le gaver d’amour et de nourriture grasse finiront par le faire s’épanouir. Il y a ensuite ce récit en mode biographie journalistique du périple de Radiohead, ponctué par les remarques acerbes de William Madlock, qui bien sûr l’aurait beaucoup mieux conté… Et finalement un récit épistolaire que William Madlock écrit depuis l’asile où celui-ci a été enfermé. Le lecteur en découvrira la raison à la fin du livre.

Et ces trois récits finissent par se rejoindre. On comprend progressivement comment et pourquoi William a sombré dans le fandom et l’intégrisme le plus absolu dans son adoration de Radiohead. Il est celui qui sait, le seul à réellement comprendre le destin de Thom Yorke et de sa bande, le seul à pouvoir décoder le complot mondial dont est victime l’humanité et que Radiohead dénonce entre les lignes dans les paroles de ses chansons.

L’auteur raconte avec amusement, ironie mais aussi empathie et douceur l’impasse psychologique dans laquelle son anti-héros s’est enfermé. On devine une part d’autobiographie ainsi que de réalité dans cette histoire, sans jamais pouvoir en mesurer l’importance exacte. Bref Colin a ficelé son roman avec pas mal de brio, comme souvent, et a rendu accessible un livre sur Radiohead à des lecteurs qui ne s’intéresseraient pas forcément au groupe. Pas mal !… (mer)
