A laid-back, enjoyable retelling of a classic boys' adventure - well, four unattached, impecunious young men setting off on a round the world cruise, with little sailing experience between them. What could possibly go wrong? In the event, the crew of 4 became 3, and they did not travel half as far as planned. "Be prepared to take twice as long as you thought to go half the distance" writes the author, in conclusion. Still, they went to interesting places, seemingly more exotic and foreign through the lens of 1948, and they met interesting people. This is not a book to change the world but a time-capsule account of sailing in the early years after the worldwide conflict of World War II. In later life, the author William Crealock became a celebrated yacht-designer, including for Bill Cronkite and William Hurt.… (mer)

This memoir is vaguely reminiscent of Three Men in a Boat but not quite as witty (he did try, with moderate success) and with far more rigging and other jargon. In fact, for most of the book there are three men in a boat (to say nothing of the dog). The author was cheerful but perhaps a bit callow. He and his friends were just demobbed from Army after WWII. Let's sail around the world, sounds like a good idea; oops, never got past the Caribbean. There are, apparently, quite a few happy-go-lucky Negroes in the Caribbean.

The most interesting part of the book in a current-affairs sense was the many weeks the author and one of his fellow sailors spent in jail, imprisoned under suspicion of violating US immigration law. They were arrested while boarding a bus in Miami and accused of writing free-lance articles while in US waters or on US soil, as well as working in transportation (they had sailed a friend's yacht south to Florida as a favour, with no money changing hands). At one point, eight migrants (the author and friend, five Mexicans, and one French-Canadian) were transferred to a state prison where federal prisoners (such as immigration cases) had to be, by policy, strictly segregated from state prisoners. Since common areas were used by the state prisoners, the eight men had to be on 24-hour lockdown in a very small cell where there were stacked bunks to sleep on but barely floor space for the men to stand in the day time -- and not for just a day or two, either. They were there for weeks. Plus ça change.

The book boasts an extensive appendix, which gives some good hints to people contemplating an extended sea voyage in a small boat, but does not explain the sail names and rigging which caused some sentences to read as complete gibberish to the uninitiated.
