Allmänna fakta

Hannah is at home waiting to go pick up her step-daughter at school when the doorbell rings. A young girl is at her door with a note from Hannah's husband, Owen. Hannah is confused as to how this young girl got a note from her husband but when she reads it, those thoughts disappear. The note simply says "Protect her." That's the last thing he told her. As she drives to school to pick up Bailey, Owen's daughter, she hears on the NPR about raids taking place at The Shop, which is where Owen works. When Bailey gets in the car, she has a strange duffel bag she received from her dad. It's filled with cash. Lots of cash.

As Hannah and Bailey try to figure what is going on and how involved Owen is, they are visited by someone from the US Marshall's office as well as the FBI. Both saying not to trust the other. Hannah doesn't know what to do but she knows one thing for sure: Owen wasn't involved.

This is a beautiful book. I was annoyed at how the flashbacks kept going farther back in time, but it all makes sense for the mystery. Also, even if the ending wasn't what I hope for, I love it to bits. 'Hearing' a character said 'mom' had never been more satisfying.

A Reese?s Book Club pick. Very engaging story of newly married woman to a widowed man with a teenage girl. We learn that her husband has a past with mafia type people and is on the run. He leaves a note for his wife to protect his daughter. From there the story takes off and keeps you wanting to learn who he is and why he is on the run.Kirkus: When a devoted husband and father disappears, his wife and daughter set out to find him.Hannah Hall is deeply in love with her husband of one year, Owen Michaels. She?s also determined to win over his 16-year-old daughter, Bailey, who has made it very clear that she?s not thrilled with her new stepmother. Despite the drama, the family is mostly a happy one. They live in a lovely houseboat in Sausalito; Hannah is a woodturner whose handmade furniture brings in high-dollar clientele; and Owen works for The Shop, a successful tech firm. Their lives are shattered, however, when Hannah receives a note saying ?Protect her? and can?t reach Owen by phone. Then there?s the bag full of cash Bailey finds in her school locker and the shocking news that The Shop?s CEO has been taken into custody. Hannah learns that the FBI has been investigating the firm for about a year regarding some hot new software they took to market before it was fully functional, falsifying their financial statements. Hannah refuses to believe her husband is involved in the fraud, and a U.S. marshal assigned to the case claims Owen isn?t a suspect. Hannah doesn?t know whom to trust, though, and she and Bailey resolve to root out the clues that might lead to Owen. They must also learn to trust one another. Hannah?s narrative alternates past and present, detailing her early days with Owen alongside her current hunt for him, and author Dave throws in a touch of danger and a few surprises. But what really drives the story is the evolving nature of Hannah and Bailey?s relationship, which is by turns poignant and frustrating but always realistic.Light on suspense but still a solid page-turner.… (mer)

Nice story about a family who owns a vineyard in Sonoma that is about to be sold. Trials and tribulations of the three adult kids and their romantic lives AND the parents who are dealing with changes in their own relationship. Besides the romantic stories there is a lot of discussion about how to make good wine.

There are some things that annoyed me greatly (like the unnecessary alrea be of a movie star) but overall I found this a pleasant diversion. It would not shock me if there is another book to come about these characters.… (mer)
