Kort biografi
Colin Dexter began his career as a teacher of Greek and Latin, but increasing deafness made him give it up. He took a job with the Oxford Delegacy of Local Examinations in Summertown, and moved there with his wife Dorothy (nee Cooper) in 1966. Before beginning to write fiction, he produced general studies textbooks. A wet summer vacation in North Wales with two complaining children and nothing to do gave him the impetus to write his first detective story. It took a while for the Morse novels to gain popularity, which made Dexter keep his day job for 22 years until he retired. He won the coveted gold dagger from the Crime Writers Association for best crime novel of the year more than once, and several runners-up silver daggers. The Morse novels were adapted as a highly-successful British television series called Inspector Morse, which ran from 1987 to 2000.

Recensioner

In this penultimate book in the Inspector Morse series, Morse and Lewis investigate the seemingly motiveless murder of a young woman, shot through the blind-covered window of her kitchen by an intruder who came down the back alley behind the houses. Of course, it is Morse who realises eventually that it could have been a case of mistaken identity due to the house numbering.

Morse has a serious health issue which develops in this story but which, in his usual curmudgeonly fashion he tries to ignore as best as he can. He comes up with a number of theories as to who the murderer is, especially when another occurs, and with how it relates to a contest at Lonsdale College where two men and their wives are rivals for the position of the next Master. I'm not sure though that the character of the Master as portrayed, although sickening to Morse, is as obviously nasty as in the TV adaptation which I still remember some years after last viewing it.

There is a foreshadowing of the final novel here and an air of sadness especially over the fate of the young wife of one of the characters. But there is some nice interplay with subtle humour between the two detectives and once again Lewis' long suffering nature is to the fore. Morse finally reveals the secret of his first name in this volume, which was a long kept secret at the time. All in all, a solid and page turning 3 star read.

As a fan of the TV series starring John Thaw I had hoped to enjoy this novel more than I did. I realised after buying it that it is late in the set of novels and therefore Morse is in decline, accelerating the process by being unable to give up smoking and drinking despite having to spend a few days in hospital due to an exacerbated chest infection. The plot is rather convoluted featuring two murders, one leading on from another, and with one of the victims being so unlikeable that you end up rooting for the murderers to get away with it.

Structurally the author's erudition is on display with apposite quotations heading up each of the chapters. I found the old style of narrative where there is an omniscient author who occasionally intrudes very obviously into the text, together with the constant head hopping whereby we are told what every character in a scene is thinking, rather off putting. Also Morse is made rather unlikeable himself in this novel with even Lewis looking askance at him at one point. Afterwards I viewed the TV adaptation and found it had been considerably streamlined and the whole subplot of Morse's ill health and decline towards a projected retirement in a couple of years omitted. Of course there are a lot more episodes than novels so the character could not be killed off so quickly on TV. On the whole though, some of the more questionable and unconvincing parts of the novel such as Morse's reciprocated and unrequited love with the prostitute daughter of one character were well advisedly excised from the TV version with no loss as far as I was concerned. All in all, I would rate this at 3 stars.

On staycation, Morse comes across the solved case of the murder of a churchwarden followed a few days later by the suicide of the Vicar of St. Frideswide's, assumed to be the murderer, but he feels something isn't right.

The trouble is that although I like Oxford setting and the fiendishly clever puzzles in these books, I've come to realise that despite the occasional flashes of erudition I don't actually like Morse himself very much. Yes, this is the 1970s but the spectacle of a middle-aged man who acts like a teenager who has just discovered the top shelf at the newsagent's is just too depressing.… (mer)

Nicholas Quinn, a member of the Oxford Foreign Examinations Syndicate, who is almost totally deaf but a very talented lip reader, is found murdered at his home. Morse and Lewis investigate.

I enjoy these stories, and there was a good twist at the end, but I wish Hathaway was involved.
