A poem where it is difficult to interpret any particular point or meaning, except that a win by Fitzroy makes the narrator happy. Two stanzas.
Ray Noble and his wife Beryl are die-hard supporters of VFL club Fitzroy. They are battlers trying to hold onto a football team and a way of life centred around a local club and community. Their daughter Gail hates football and forms a relationship with a tycoon who wants to privatize the VFL competition, turn it into a pure T.V. product and relocate the Fitzroy club to Japan to play as ‘Fitzaki. First performed in early 1987 when the VFL had just expanded to include Brisbane and the West Coast Eagles in the league this play is partly a satirical and poetical prophecy about the ramifications of the emergence of a national competition.… (mer)
