I've wanted to be a writer since I was seven years old. I loved books and reading so much that I thought that writing books must be even better than reading them (I was also pretty sure that authors spent a lot of time in their pajamas). So that seemed like a good deal.

After attending Boston College, where I majored in English and Communications, I went to graduate school at Emerson College to get my Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing. In college, I wrote lots of terrible short stories about boring adults and their boring problems, but when I went to graduate school I discovered that my stories were much better when my characters were kids. Their problems and situations were way more interesting to me.

It took me seven years of hard work to get my first book published, and I still work really hard on every story that I write. But my seven year old self would be happy to know that she was right: being a writer is the best job ever. And although I don't get to work in my pajamas all the time....sometimes I do!

I laughed, a lot, at this book. Well not at the book but with the book. As a middle-schooler I had been teeny-tiny in every way possible (height, weight, voice) so while I never got the taunts of 'Mooooo' from my classmates, I did get height jokes a plenty. And mouse jokes. I felt as if Celeste and I had a lot in common (not just the love of cookies) and that made me root for her the entire time.

I admit her attempts to wreck her chances at Miss Husky Peach (husky, who in their right mind would refer to a girl as 'husky'?) were fun and creative. I was thrilled that she didn't angst about the fact she was chubby neither before or after her Operation Skinny Celeste plan. She might not have been thrilled with being chubby, but she didn't spend most of the book whining about it and trying unhealthy methods to lose weight.

And her positive message I think won me over. Just because we're not all size zero doesn't mean we're any better or worse for it. Its how you see yourself and how you feel about yourself. Sure eating cookies instead of veggies isn't healthy, but why deny yourself a treat every so often? Learn to balance out everything and in the end you'll be a happier you.

Thirteen-year-old Margaret (nicknamed "Moxie") loves her grandfather (nicknamed "Grumps") to pieces, even if he is a former small-time criminal with ties to the Boston mafia. When a mysterious stranger knocks on their apartment door one day demanding that Grumps return some stolen items from a big mob man who's just been released after more than a decade in prison, Moxie is determined to solve this problem. She's faced with just two *teeny tiny* problems -- one is that Grumps now has Alzheimer's and doesn't remember anything; the second is that the stranger gave her a deadline of just 14 days to recover the missing items. With the help of her geocaching-obsessed best friend Ollie, can Moxie solve a decades-old mystery?

This book was an interesting mystery and the deadline plus fleeting memories is an intriguing twist to make the solution both urgent yet out of reach. I loved how the mystery tied in real places and bits of history from throughout Boston, making this book oddly educational without ever feeling didactic.

Moxie is a compelling character with her little quirks, such as a love of leggings as a fashion statement in any weather and an appreciation for classic rock to pair with her moods. The family relationships are strong and sweet, even if unorthodox. Moxie's friendship with Ollie is also very touching with the concern they have for one another through thick and thin. Both family and friendship give the book some diversity.

The audiobook narrator had a terrible fake Boston accent but on the plus side, she put a lot of enthusiasm into the characters. Unfortunately my copy had a scratch bad enough to skip over the entire climatic final fight/confrontation scene, which was disappointing but I still enjoyed the book overall.

Addendum: I was able to get my hands on a print copy and read the couple of chapters towards the end that I missed when the audiobook skipped. It was a satisfying conclusion to the story. However, I didn't love the book enough to want to read the spin-off, which features Ollie as the protagonist.
