This has absolutely nothing to do with wizards (only a small mention about one near the end) but all about a man named Jim. It was basically a diary of Jim’s life when he is in Worcester the place he grew up. He is there as his dad is having open heart surgery and he is there to take care of him. During that time he gets in with his old friend Joe, who is much into drinks and drugs and things take a turn for the worse.
I didn’t think much to this book if I am honest, it didn’t capture me. There was no exciting plot, drugs and drink seemed to be all Jim and Joe did together and Jim lending money to Joe. Worcester didn’t sound like a nice place at all. Jim actually annoyed me actually. Yes he may have been having a tough time losing his job, going to look after his dad, but he was in a relationship and just sleeps with a random girl he meets in the hospital waiting room.

The narrator did capture me though; his voice reminded me of the intro to the 80’s TV show of The A-Team.

Rachel is pregnant and two men are very interested in being the father, but she chooses to go with Norwood. The book is full of interesting characters that have faults as the United States disintegrates into a society where half are anti-technology and the other half cannot get enough electronics. With it brings violence, crude behaviors, sexual excesses, and antisocial tendencies. It definitely is not a fun place to live.

I received this book as a first reads winner, which I really enjoy discovering new authors. I thought the description of the book sounded interesting and the cover drew my attention. The description talks about Lynn and Marv in their late twenties who begin to question their choices and one night reunites with Caroline who they both had slept with in High School. A few weeks later she is arrested for murdering her husband and infant son.

First off, this book was very disappointing. I thought it was going to be fast-paced and Lynn and Marv would be sucked into what happens with the murder. Boy was that ever wrong. You don’t get introduced to Caroline until pretty much halfway into the book. The first half is slow, boring and did not grab my attention. It felt like the first half of the book was used to build the characters of Lynn and Marv.

The description makes it sound like Caroline is a big part of the story but she is barely even in it, There isn’t much with the mystery of the murders chasing after the two men and then the book ended really weird. I hate to say it but I did not enjoy this book at all. It was hard to follow, there were so many words in the wrong place or missing and it was just not interesting. Maybe it’s not my kind of book, but had it not been a book I won as a first reads winner I would have stopped reading almost immediately.
